Impact of food allergy on the growth of children with moderate-severe atopic dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects 10% to 20% of children in the United States, with 1 of 3 of those affected having moderate to severe disease.1 Significant sleep disturbance due to itching and increased metabolic demands due to rapid skin turnover and chronic inflammation are hypothesized to impact the growth of children with AD.2,3 Between 15% and 40% of children with AD have food allergy (FA) as well, which alone can have adverse growth consequences.4,5 However, few studies to date have examined the role that coexistent food allergy has on the growth of children with AD.

Epidemiology of Sesame Allergy in the United States
This study describes the current prevalence, severity, and determinants of sesame allergy among the U.S. population. It was hypothesized that current prevalence rates of sesame allergy are comparable to rates of other food allergies for which labeling is legally mandated.

Time for Allergists to Consider the Role of Mouse Allergy in Non-Inner City Children with Asthma
Publication date: Available online 5 April 2019Source: The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In PracticeAuthor(s): Elissa M. Abrams, Stanley J. Szefler, Allan B. BeckerMouse allergen is endemic in the inner cities of the United States, with research predominantly in the Northeastern United States. A recent practice parameter notes the effect of mouse exposure in asthma in inner cities. However, studies are emerging that find a role of mouse allergen in non–inner cities as well. Mouse sensitization is associated with mouse allergen exposure and has been linked with adverse asthma outcomes including increased ast...

The clinical presentation of alpha-gal allergy among pediatric patients with food allergy in southwest Missouri
Alpha-gal allergy is associated with immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to galactose- α-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal), a carbohydrate found in beef, pork, and lamb. First described in the adult population in 2009 by Commins et al., this syndrome is associated with delayed anaphylaxis, angioedema, and urticaria with symptom onset 3 to 6 hours after eating red meat.1,2,3 Bites from ticks, namely the Lone Star Tick (Amblyomma americanum) in the United States, are associated with production of IgE antibodies to alpha-gal, resulting in an immune system primed to react to foods containing the antigen in patients who previously toler...

The role of shared decision making in pediatric food allergy management
Publication date: Available online 18 September 2019Source: The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In PracticeAuthor(s): Aikaterini Anagnostou, Jonathan O’B Hourihane, Matthew GreenhawtAbstractShared decision-making was first highlighted in a report by the Institute of Medicine in 2001. The primary aim of this initiative was to improve the quality of care provided to patients in the United States by creating a health care system that is safe, effective, efficient and equitable. Currently, medical decision making is based on a patient-centered approach with the individuals’ preferences, needs and values guiding...

Trends in Alpha-gal Allergy Diagnostic Testing in the United States, 2010 –2018
Alpha-gal allergy is an immunoglobulin E (IgE) mediated allergy to galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal), a carbohydrate found in mammalian meat. National data on incidence and distribution are not available, but case reports commonly originate from the southeastern United States, and suggest exposure to the Lone Star tick (Amblyomma americanum) as a risk factor.

The Forgotten “Weed” Allergy: A Case Report of Fresh-Food Skin Prick Testing as a Model for Evaluating Allergy in a Patient with Cannabis-Induced Urticaria
Cannabis sativa (marijuana) use has steadily increased in the past decade with increasing decriminalization and acceptance among the United States population. Subsequently, the rates of allergic reactions associated with cannabis handing, ingestion, and utilization have also risen by association. Here we present a case of marijuana contact allergy and review the protocols, challenges, and ethical considerations associated with marijuana fresh food derived skin pick testing (FFSPT).

Barriers to Food Allergy Management Among Low-Income Americans
The burden of food allergy (FA) among children in the United States has grown in recent decades, with low socioeconomic strata (SES) populations disproportionately affected.1 In addition to demonstrating substantial variability in FA prevalence and severity across SES1, data also indicate that important differences may exist with respect to food allergy management practices. For example, low SES patients are more likely to receive treatment in the emergency department for FA and report greater expenditures on FA-related emergency care.

Direct Amoxicillin Challenge without Preliminary Skin Testing for Pediatric Patients with Penicillin Allergy Labels
While ∼10% of the United States population carry penicillin allergy labels, the majority of these patients are not truly allergic [1, 2]. Antibiotic allergy labels have direct impact on antibiotic stewardship and contribute to prolonged hospitalizations, secondary infections like C. difficile, and drug resistant strains like Methicillin-Resistant S. aureus, leading to increased costs and resource burden for hospital systems [3].
