N-Acetylcysteine: more than preventing contrast-induced nephropathy in uremic patients-focus on the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
Int Urol Nephrol. 2023 Jan 3. doi: 10.1007/s11255-022-03455-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOxidative stress (OS) has been recognized as a pathophysiologic mechanism underlying the development and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). OS, which results from the disturbance of balance among pro-oxidants and antioxidants favoring the pro-oxidants, is present even in early CKD and increases progressively along with deterioration of kidney function to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). In ESKD, OS is further exacerbated mainly due to dialysis procedures per se and predisposes to increased cardiovascular morbidity and mor...

Hodgkin Lymphoma on Hemodialysis: A Review of Treatment and Recommendations
Clin Lymphoma Myeloma Leuk. 2022 Jul 17:S2152-2650(22)00226-9. doi: 10.1016/j.clml.2022.07.008. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChemotherapy for classic Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) patients on hemodialysis (HD) is an extremely challenging situation because pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies of most chemotherapeutics are lacking for the HD patient, and the small amount of evidence available comes mostly from case reports and small case series. In this review, we provide recommendations based on treatment experience of cHL patients on HD in the literature. HD patients undergoing chemotherapy are at risk of overdose and tox...

Diagnostics and treatment of selected clinically relevant, acute drug intoxications.
Abstract Acute drug poisoning due to accidental or self-damaging overdoses is responsible for 5-10% of emergency medical interventions in Germany. The treatment of asymptomatic to life-threatening courses requires extensive expertise. On the basis of a selective literature search, this article gives an overview of selected clinically relevant, acute drug poisonings with regard to epidemiology, symptomatology, diagnostics, and therapy.Intoxications with psychotropic drugs are the most common drug intoxications. A 19-year-old at 37 weeks gestation with an acute acetylsalicylic acid overdose
We describe a case of a gravid patient at ∼37 weeks gestational age with a self-reported acetylsalicylic acid ingestion of 32.5 g and review prior cases of both acute and chronic salicylate ingestion in pregnancy in order to determine the clinical precedent for hemodialysis in this situation.
