Cognitive function and disability in late life: an ecological validation of the 10/66 battery of cognitive tests among community‐dwelling older adults in South India
ConclusionsLower scores on individual domains of the 10/66 battery of cognitive tests are associated with higher levels of disability and functional impairment in community‐dwelling older adults. These culture and education fair tests are suitable for use in population‐based research in India.

Sex, Nativity, and Disability in Older Mexican Americans
ConclusionMexican‐born men were less disabled than their U.S.‐born counterparts, and Mexican‐born women were more likely to report disability than Mexican‐born men.

Costs of informal care in a sample of German geriatric stroke survivors
Abstract Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability. A large proportion of geriatric stroke survivors receive informal care. The assessment and monetary valuation of informal care should therefore constitute an essential part of any health economic analysis, but it is hardly measured in stroke caregiver studies. The aim of the current research was to estimate the amount of informal care provided by caregivers of stroke survivors aged 60 years and older and to calculate its economic value. Information about caregiving time in activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), ...

Explanatory factors for the association between depression and long-term physical disability after stroke
Conclusion: the association between depression and physical disability appears to be multifactorial. The use of SSRIs after stroke requires further research.

How does age affect the care dependency risk one year after stroke? A study based on claims data from a German health insurance fund
Conclusions: Our results show that age has an effect on care dependency risk that cannot be explained by burden of disease. Thus, there must be other underlying age-dependent factors that account for the remaining age effects (e.g., social conditions). Further studies are needed to explore the causes of the strong age effects observed.

Mortality of older persons living alone: Singapore Longitudinal Ageing Studies
Background: We investigated the association of living alone with mortality among older persons, independently of marital, health and other factors, and explored its effect modification by age group, sex, marital status and physical functional disability.MethodUsing data from 8 years of mortality follow up (1 September 2003 to 31 December 2011) of 2553 participants in the Singapore Longitudinal Ageing Studies (SLAS) cohort, we estimated hazard ratio (HR) of mortality associated with living alone using Cox proportional hazard models. Results: At baseline, 7.4 % (N = 189) of the participants were living alone, and 227 (...

Older Adults' Residential Proximity to Their Children: Changes After Cardiovascular Events
We examined subsequent development of stroke, heart attack, and/or heart failure among these older adults and examined changes in their residential proximity to their closest child before and after the CV event. We then compared the likelihood of changes in proximity between families with and without CV events. Finally, we determined which types of families are most likely to relocate following a CV event. Results. Having a first CV event increases the 2-year predicted probability of children and adult parents moving in with and closer to each other (relative risk ratio = 1.61 and 1.55, respectively). Families are especia...

Pharmacotherapy to Enhance Cognitive and Motor Recovery Following Stroke
Abstract Stroke is a leading cause of disability among older adults and more than half of stroke survivors have some residual neurological impairment. Traditionally, managing the aftermath of stroke has been by the implementation of several physical and language therapy modalities. The limitations of these rehabilitation efforts have sparked an interest in finding other ways to enhance neurological recovery. Some of these novel approaches have included pharmacological interventions, cell-derived treatments, and cortical magnetic stimulation. Mounting evidence over the last 2 decades suggests that pharmacological ...

Depression after minor stroke: the association with disability and quality of life – a 1‐year follow‐up study
ConclusionsPost‐stroke depression was independently associated with disability and poor QoL at 1 year after first‐ever minor ischemic stroke. Recovery from PSD decreased but did not eliminate the adverse impacts of PSD on outcomes of minor stroke.

Risk Factors Associated with Recurrent Strokes in Young and Elderly Patients: A Hospital-Based Study
Conclusion The predictive independent risk factors of recurrent stroke differ between young and older stroke patients. Our findings may help guide the prevention of recurrent strokes.

Trends in Disability in Activities of Daily Living Among Chinese Older Adults, 1997-2006: The China Health and Nutrition Survey
Conclusions. The prevalence of disability in basic ADLs among Chinese older adults decreased from 1997 to 2006. Stroke and multiple cardiometabolic diseases appear to become less disabling over time, which may partly contribute to the favorable trend in ADL disability.

Older age is a strong predictor for poor outcome in intracerebral haemorrhage: the INTERACT2 study
Conclusion: In the INTERACT2 cohort, older people had more severe ICH and worse outcomes (death, major disability and HRQoL). These data will help guide clinicians manage older people with haemorrhagic stroke. Clinical Trial Registration: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov (NCT00716079).

Increased Cardiovascular Stiffness and Impaired Age-related Functional Status
Our objective was to determine if increased cardiovascular (CV) stiffness is associated with disability in middle-aged and older adults at risk for congestive heart failure. CV stiffness (brachial pulse pressure/left ventricular stroke volume indexed to body surface area) and total disability (the summed assessment of activities of daily living, mobility, and instrumental activities of daily living) were measured in 445 individuals. A subset of 109 randomly selected individuals also underwent physical function testing. Total disability was associated with CV stiffness (p = .01), driven by an association with mobility (p = ...

Rehabilitation Outcomes of Patients With Stroke: Effect of Age on Functional Outcome and Discharge Destination
Conclusions: Although functional outcomes of younger patients with stroke were better as compared to the older patients with stroke, at the end of rehabilitation most of our patients regarding age were able to return home independently.
