Informal caregivers' burden and stress in caring for stroke survivors with spatial neglect: an exploratory mixed-method study.
CONCLUSIONS: This exploratory study suggests that spatial neglect may heighten caregivers' burden and stress levels. Future studies with a large sample size are required. PMID: 27216085 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effects of virtual reality for stroke individuals based on the International Classification of Functioning and Health: a systematic review.
DISCUSSION: The effects of virtual reality on stroke rehabilitation based on the ICF framework are positive in Body Function and Body Structure. However, the results in the domains Activity and Participation are inconclusive. More high-quality clinical trials are needed to confirm the effectiveness of virtual reality in the domains of Activity and Participation. PMID: 27796177 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Door-to-Needle Delays in Minor Stroke Brief Report
We examined the association of delays in door-to-needle (DTN) time with stroke severity. Methods—We performed a retrospective analysis of all stroke patients who received intravenous tissue-type plasminogen activator in our emergency department between July 1, 2011, and February 29, 2016. Baseline characteristics and DTN were compared between MS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score ≤5) and nonminor strokes (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score>5). We applied causal inference methodology to estimate the magnitude and mechanisms of the causal effect of stroke severity on DTN.Results—Of 315 patie...

Clinical Utility of Electronic Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score Software in the ENCHANTED Trial Database Clinical Sciences
Background and Purpose—Clinical utility of electronic Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (e-ASPECTS), an automated system for quantifying signs of infarction, was evaluated in a large database of thrombolyzed patients with acute ischemic stroke. Methods—All baseline noncontrast computed tomographic scans of patients with anterior circulation acute ischemic stroke who participated in the alteplase dose arm of the randomized controlled trial ENCHANTED (Enhanced Control of Hypertension and Thrombolysis Stroke Study) were reviewed; poor quality and large (>6 mm) slice thickness were excluded. Included scans had e-ASPECTS...

Activities of daily living and life satisfaction of persons with stroke after rehabilitation in China: a longitudinal descriptive study.
CONCLUSIONS: Functional independence in ADLs increased within 3 years after discharge from rehabilitation, while life satisfaction was reported low and constant. Life satisfaction was predicted by severity of stroke, marital status, and return back to work at 1 year post discharge and by disability at 3 years post discharge. Thrombolysis for Ischemic Stroke Associated With Infective Endocarditis: Results From the Nationwide Inpatient Sample Brief Reports
Conclusions— High rates of post-thrombolytic intracerebral hemorrhage and low rates of favorable outcome mandate caution in using IVT in acute ischemic stroke patients with IE.

Understanding Stroke Survivorship: Expanding the Concept of Poststroke Disability Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Stroke survivors have more participation restrictions than can be accounted for by sociodemographic profiles and comorbidity burden. Future work aimed at improving physical capacity, reducing depressive and anxiety symptoms, and improving aphasia/dysarthria has potential to enhance participation.

Employment after stroke: report of a state of the science symposium.
Abstract For many stroke survivors, returning to work becomes an important emotional and functional milestone in signaling recovery. It can also provide needed financial support and reduce the burden placed on society in the form of government assistance. The complex nature of the return-to-work process involves many factors that may support or interfere with reintegration into the workforce. For the purpose of examining this important topic more closely, the Rehabilitation Research & Training Center on Enhancing the Functional and Employment Outcomes of Individuals Who Experience a Stroke held a State of the ...

Sex-Related Differences of Acute Stroke Unit Care: Results From the Austrian Stroke Unit Registry Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— We identified no disproportions in quality of care in the acute SU setting between men and women, but the outcome was significantly different. Further studies on the poststroke period including socioeconomic aspects are needed to clarify this finding.

Acute stroke imaging: recent updates.
Authors: Dubey P, Pandey S, Moonis G Abstract Acute ischemic stroke imaging is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Neuroimaging plays a crucial role in early diagnosis and yields essential information regarding tissue integrity, a factor that remains a key therapeutic determinant. Given the widespread public health implications of stroke and central role of neuroimaging in overall management, acute stroke imaging remains a heavily debated, extensively researched, and rapidly evolving subject. There has been recent debate in the scientific community due to divided opinions on the use of CT p...

Real-world affected upper limb activity in chronic stroke: an examination of potential modifying factors.
CONCLUSIONS: Severity of motor dysfunction and ADL status should be taken into consideration when setting goals for UL activity in people with chronic stroke. Given the strong, positive correlation between affected and unaffected UL activity, encouragement to increase activity of the unaffected UL may increase affected UL activity. Are virtual reality technologies effective in improving lower limb outcomes for patients following stroke - a systematic review with meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: VR improves functional balance and various aspects of gait in chronic populations. Evidence also suggests that VR is just as effective as conventional therapy, hence its' use in practice is determined by affordability, and patient/practitioner preferences.
