Wheels of Injustice: How Medical Schools Retained the Power to Discriminate Against Applicants in Wheelchairs in the Era of Disability Rights
This article explores how medical schools set boundaries for admission into the profession, remained intransigent in their discrimination, and persuaded courts to side with them. In the 1970s, medical schools created exclusionary physical requirements and persuaded the Supreme Court that these "technical standards" preserved patient safety. In the 1980s, schools asserted th...

However, medical education has historically excluded LGBTQIA + health-related content in formal curricula. It is common for medical students to interact with diverse patient populations through clinical rotations; however, access to and knowledge about LGBTQIA + patients is inconsist...

Weight-Bearing Physical Activity Influences the Effect of Vitamin D on Bone Turnover Markers in Patients with Intellectual Disability.
CONCLUSIONS: Although high-dose vitamin D appeared to suppress osteoclast activity in NWB adults with IDs, the increase in serum CTX levels in those with LWB activity implies activation of osteoclasts that could exacerbate their unique low bone mass and increase fracture risk. The results support the use of a lower-dose vitamin D regimen in this patient group with LWB. PMID: 31375839 [PubMed - in process]

Now Is the Time: A Primer on How to Be a Disability Education Champion in Your Medical School
One in four noninstitutionalized adults in the United States lives with a disability. People with disabilities have frequent interactions with the medical community and the healthcare system yet experience disparities in access and outcomes. The Association of American Medical Colleges has included disability in its definition of diversity as one of the aspects of patient care that may affect health equity. However, training in the lived experience of disability is not always included in medical education. Physiatrists make excellent disability champions in medical schools, given their training and experience in the care o...
