Sex differences in acute type A aortic dissection: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Composite analysis indicates that early mortality does not differ between the sexes; however, late outcomes favour males. Differences in preoperative presentation and subsequent procedure selection between the sexes likely contribute to the disparity in late outcomes. Decision-making for surgical treatment of ATAAD should account for sex-specific risk factors.PMID:35687063 | DOI:10.23736/S0021-9509.22.12273-1

Direct oral anticoagulation in atrial fibrillation and heart valve surgery-a meta-analysis and systematic review
CONCLUSION: Cumulative data analysis reveals that DOAC may provide an effective and safe alternative to VKA in patients with AF after surgically implanted bioprosthetic heart valves or repair with AF. Within a relatively heterogeneous study population, this meta-analysis shows a risk reduction of major bleedings and thromboembolic stroke or systemic embolisms for DOAC.PMID:35481366 | DOI:10.1177/17539447221093963

Impact of atrial fibrillation on in-hospital outcomes among hospitalizations for cardiac surgery: an analysis of the National Inpatient Sample
The short-term impact of atrial fibrillation (AF) on cardiac surgery hospitalizations has been previously reported in cohorts of various sizes, but results have been variable. Using the 2005–2014 National Inpatient Sample, we identified all adult hospitalizations for cardiac surgery using the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification as any procedure code and AF as any diagnosis code. We estimated the impact of AF on inpatient mortality, length of stay (LOS), and cost of hospitalization using survey-weighted, multivariable logistic, accelerated failure-time log-normal, and log-tr...

Patient preferences for mitral valve regurgitation treatment: a discrete choice experiment
CONCLUSION: This study of US adults with DMR provides quantitative measures of risk tolerance for tradeoffs related to repair by a beating heart approach relative to conventional open-heart surgery (standard of care). These results may inform DMR treatment choices from regulatory agencies, payers, clinicians, and patients considering a beating heart repair or treatments with similar attributes as potential new alternatives to conventional surgery.PMID:34981982 | DOI:10.1080/00325481.2021.2020571
