Stand-Alone Left Atrial appendage occlusion for throMboembolism prevention in nonvalvular Atrial fibrillatioN DiseasE Registry (SALAMANDER): protocol for a prospective observational nationwide study
Introduction Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a prevalent disease considerably contributing to the worldwide cardiovascular burden. For patients at high thromboembolic risk (CHA2DS2-VASc ≥3) and not suitable for chronic oral anticoagulation, owing to history of major bleeding or other contraindications, left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) is indicated for stroke prevention, as it lowers patient’s ischaemic burden without augmentation in their anticoagulation profile. Methods and analysis Stand-Alone Left Atrial appendage occlusion for throMboembolism prevention in nonvalvular Atrial fibrillatioN DiseasE Registry (S...

Early and long term coronary artery bypass grafting outcomes in patients under 45 years of age.
CONCLUSIONS: Young women who underwent CABG were burdened with higher early postoperative morbidity and mortality than young men. However, long-term outcomes (mortality, recurrent angina, and repeated myocardial revascularisation rates) did not differ significantly between the two groups. Regardless of gender, repeated myocardial revascularisation rate was significantly higher among those patients who continued to smoke after the surgery (p < 0.01). Cardioversion of Atrial Fibrillation (RHYTHM-AF) International Registry in Poland.
CONCLUSIONS: Conversion to sinus rhythm was attempted in < 60% of the patients with AF admitted to the hospital with an intention to terminate arrhythmia. Electrical cardioversion was successful in ~90% of the patients, while pharmacological cardioversion in ~75% of the patients (amiodarone and propafenone were most commonly used). The rate of complications was low (2.8%). PMID: 24526513 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clinical characteristics of patients with myocardial infarction treated in the regional hospital of Radomszczanski District in 2007-2009.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite the increase of the hospitalised STEMI/NSTEMI ratio, the incidence of risk factors did not change in the population of Radomszczanski District over the analysed period. PMID: 25347198 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Management of patients with valvular and non-valvular atrial fibrillation in Poland: Results from Reference Cardiology University Centre.
CONCLUSIONS: Our population with AF have similar risk of stroke and bleeding as in European registries. The need for anticoagulation in AF patients is well established in daily medical care in Poland similarly to Western Europe. Patients with valvular AF are more frequently prescribed antithrombotic therapy than patients with non-valvular AF. In-hospital mortality is relatively low in both valvular and non-valvular AF patients and connected with old age and diminished EF. PMID: 25428729 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Polish and European management strategies in patients with atrial fibrillation. Data from the EURObservational Research Programme-Atrial Fibrillation General Registry Pilot Phase (EORP-AF Pilot).
CONCLUSIONS    A rhythm control-oriented strategy in patients with AF with the use of ablation in cardiology wards is more frequent in Poland than in other EU countries. Similar to other EU countries, compliance with the ESC guidelines regarding anticoagulation in AF patients is suboptimal in Poland. Undertreatment was observed in a significant proportion of patients at high risk of stroke, while a large group of low-risk patients are overtreated. Differences between the types of recruiting centers in Poland and other EU countries might have influenced the results. PMID: 27000745 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapy in elderly people with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Poland (based on the PolSenior Study).
CONCLUSIONS: Cardiovascular pharmacological prevention in the elderly with T2DM in Poland seems to be unsatisfactory. Educational programmes concerning current recommendations for pharmacological cardiovascular prevention should be developed among general practitioners. PMID: 28883841 [PubMed]

Usefulness of N-terminal-pro B-type natriuretic peptide as a heart failure marker in patients undergoing the percutaneous left atrial appendage occlusion.
CONCLUSIONS: When diagnosing HF in atrial fibrillation patients, the higher cut-off value of NT-proBNP should be used. NT-proBNP remains an appropriate diagnostic marker of HF in patients after LAAO. PMID: 28980292 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Left atrial appendage occlusion: consensus document of Association of Cardiovascular Interventions and Heart Rhythm Section of Polish Cardiac Society.
Abstract Left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion devices have the potential to influence the clinical approach to stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation. A number of percutaneous techniques have been proposed, including various intracardiac plugs and also external ligation. Several devices have been already used in Poland. One of them has been evaluated in randomised controlled trials compared with the current standard of care. Others are less well studied but quite commonly used in Europe. It is anticipated that the use of LAA occlusion technologies in clinical practice will expand. This Consensus D...

Differences in knowledge among patients with atrial fibrillation receiving NOACs and vitamin K antagonists.
CONCLUSIONS: The knowledge of arrhythmia and anticoagulation is better regarding the safety issues among subjects on NOACs compared with VKA. Irrespective of the type of OAC therapy, education of AF patients should be improved. PMID: 29528483 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Applications of low-cost 3D printing in left atrial appendage closure using epicardial approaches - initial clinical experience.
Conclusions: Left atrial appendage 3D model is a useful tool in preoperative planning of a left atrial appendage occlusion using epicardial approaches with thoracoscopic or percutaneous access using LARIAT device. The quality of low-cost 3D printed LAA model is sufficient in planning minimally invasive procedure. PMID: 30069196 [PubMed]

Atrial fibrillation independently linked with depression in community-dwelling older population. Results from the nationwide PolSenior project.
CONCLUSIONS: In community-dwelling geriatric Polish population AF is associated with higher prevalence of depression. This association is independent from the demographic factors, disabilities and comorbidities (including history of stroke). PMID: 30219348 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
