Major adverse cardiovascular events associated with testosterone treatment: a pharmacovigilance study of the FAERS database
Conclusion: For myocardial infarction and cardiomyopathy, TRT statistically tended to increase the risk of MACEs, while for cardiac arrhythmia, cardiac failure, and stroke, TRT demonstrated beneficial effects among the population with morbidities, such as testosterone deficiency (TD), diabetes mellitus (DM), and hypertension. MACEs were rare but led to serious outcomes including significant increase in death and disability. Since 2018, and before 2014, reports referring to TRT associated with MACEs were relatively scarce, which indicated that there might be a considerable number of cases that went unrecorded, due to neglec...

Prescriptive behavior of non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants in patients affected by atrial fibrillation in general practice
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Jun 21;165:115020. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115020. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia worldwide and in recent years the pharmacological approach has been strongly implemented; in Italy, the prescription of the non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants (NOAC) was also extended to General Practitioners (GPs) since 2020. The aim of the present study was to investigate the GPs prescribing behaviour of NOACs. An observational study was performed by using the computerized medical record of 14 GPs in Sicily: patients affected by AF were selected and st...

Stroke volume variation as an index of fluid responsiveness can be impaired by mental stress
We examined 102 young healthy volunteers (58 females), mean age 18.6 years. Finger arterial blood pressure was recorded by volume-clamp photoplethysmographic method (Finometer Pro, FMS, Amsterdam, Netherland). From the blood pressure curve, a built in ModelFlow algorithm calculated stroke volume values (SV) for each heartbeat. Respiratory volume was recorded using calibrated respiratory inductive plethysmography (RespiTrace, NIMS, Miami Beach, FL, USA). During four phases of examination protocol (supine rest, head-up tilt (HUT), supine recovery, mental arithmetic task (MA)) we analyzed SVV related to respiratory activity. ...
