Gender Differences in Cardiovascular Risk Factors, Clinical Presentation, and Outcome of Patients Admitted with a Hypertensive Crisis at the Buea Regional Hospital, Cameroon
CONCLUSIONS: Men admitted for an HC had a significantly higher cardiovascular risk burden and higher psychomotor agitation. However, there were no significant differences in the types of hypertensive emergencies and outcomes between men and women.PMID:35801166 | PMC:PMC9256455 | DOI:10.1155/2022/3062526

Alcohol Consumption and Long-Term Mortality in Men with or without a History of Myocardial Infarction
CONCLUSION: Alcohol consumption of 23-45 g/day was associated with a lower CHD mortality in MI survivors as so in men without MI.PMID:35781275 | DOI:10.5551/jat.63517

Analysis of the demographic characteristics and clinical profile of acute ischemic strokes admitted to the emergency centre in the Somalia population
This study aimed to define the etiological, demographic characteristics, classification of stroke and functional status of patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) admitted to the emergency centre, and to create projections to evaluate the incidence and genetic aspects of stroke.METHODS: The study population consisted of patients who applied to the emergency centre between 1 May 2017 and 1 May 2021 and were diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Patient demographics, season of onset, risk factors, laboratory data, imaging results, infarct location, AIS subtype and treatment outcomes were collected, and compared.RESUL...

Genetically predicted higher educational attainment decreases the risk of stroke: a multivariable Mendelian randomization study
CONCLUSIONS: We found that genetically predicated higher EA decreased the risks of total stroke, ischemic stroke, and cardioembolic stroke, independent of smoking, alcohol consumption, BMI, intelligence, and hypertension.PMID:35710362 | DOI:10.1186/s12872-022-02713-7

Health benefits of astaxanthin against age-related diseases of multiple organs: A comprehensive review
Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr. 2022 Jun 16:1-66. doi: 10.1080/10408398.2022.2084600. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAge-related diseases are associated with increased morbidity in the past few decades and the cost associated with the treatment of these age-related diseases exerts a substantial impact on social and health care expenditure. Anti-aging strategies aim to mitigate, delay and reverse aging-associated diseases, thereby improving quality of life and reducing the burden of age-related pathologies. The natural dietary antioxidant supplementation offers substantial pharmacological and therapeutic effects against various dise...

Asymptomatic cerebral findings on 3-Tesla MRI in patients with severe carotid artery stenoses
CONCLUSIONS: With pathological differences between SVD and LVD, asymptomatic SVDs except CMBs and deep ICHs often co-exists severe CA stenosis as a presentative LVD.PMID:35580410 | DOI:10.1016/j.jocn.2022.05.004

Frequent drinking is more predictive of ischemic stroke than binge drinking, but not of myocardial infarction
CONCLUSIONS: Drinking frequency may be a more important risk factor for ischemic stroke than amount per occasion. Among women, the protective effect of alcohol against MI was not evident in heavy amounts, and the risk of ischemic stroke began to increase at lower levels compared to men.PMID:35504240 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2022.04.027

De Novo Sphingolipid Biosynthesis in Atherosclerosis
Adv Exp Med Biol. 2022;1372:31-46. doi: 10.1007/978-981-19-0394-6_3.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis is the formation of fibrofatty lesions in the arterial wall, and this inflammatory state of the artery is the main cause of advanced pathological processes, including myocardial infarction and stroke. Dyslipidemic conditions with excess cholesterol accumulate within the arterial vessel wall and initiate atherogenic processes. Following vascular reaction and lipid accumulation, the vascular wall gradually thickens. Together with the occurrence of local inflammation, early atherosclerotic lesions lead to advanced pathophysiological ev...
