Considerations for Treating Nonobstetric Diseases in Pregnant Patients in the Emergency Department Setting
CONCLUSION: Practitioners in the acute care setting commonly encounter pregnant patients seeking care for nonobstetric concerns. This article covers key pregnancy-related information for the nonobstetric practitioner and focuses on the management of acute pain, UTI, and VTE during pregnancy.PMID:37076990 | DOI:10.1177/10600280231167775

Risk of thromboembolism in patients with COVID-19 who are using hormonal contraception
CONCLUSIONS: There are no comparative studies assessing risk of thromboembolism in COVID-19 patients who use hormonal contraception, which was the primary objective of this review. Very little evidence exists examining the risk of increased COVID-19 disease severity for combined hormonal contraception users compared to non-users of hormonal contraception, and the evidence that does exist is of very low certainty. The odds of hospitalization for COVID-19 positive users of combined hormonal contraceptives may be slightly decreased compared with those of hormonal contraceptive non-users, but the evidence is very uncertain as ...

Borderzone Infarcts and Recurrent Cerebrovascular Events in Symptomatic Intracranial Arterial Stenosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION: This systematic review and meta-analysis suggests that the presence of BZI secondary to ICAS may be an imaging biomarker that predicts neurological deterioration and/or stroke recurrence.PMID:37282372 | DOI:10.5853/jos.2023.00185

Qualitative assessment of available online patient resources for pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis
CONCLUSION: Freely available online DVT and PE patient information resources publish appropriate content but have very variable accountability and poor readability for the average patient.PMID:37501316 | DOI:10.1177/02683555231179536

Cell salvage for minimising perioperative allogeneic blood transfusion in adults undergoing elective surgery
CONCLUSIONS: In some types of elective surgery, cell salvage may reduce the need for and volume of allogeneic transfusion, alongside evidence of no difference in adverse events, when compared to no cell salvage. Further research is required to establish why other surgeries show no benefit from CS, through further analysis of the current evidence. More large RCTs in under-reported specialities are needed to expand the evidence base for exploring the impact of CS.PMID:37681564 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD001888.pub5

Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor for macular oedema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion.
CONCLUSIONS: The available RCT evidence suggests that repeated treatment of non-ischaemic MO secondary to BRVO with the anti-VEGF agent ranibizumab may improve clinical and visual outcomes at six and 12 months. However, the frequency of re-treatment has not yet been determined and the impact of prior or combined treatment with laser photocoagulation on the primary outcome is unclear. Results from ongoing studies should assess not only treatment efficacy but also, the number of injections needed for maintenance and long-term safety and the effect of any prior treatment. Interventions for restoring patency of occluded central venous catheter lumens (Review)
In conclusion, more research is required to establish the efficacy and safety of different treatment interventions used to unblock occluded central venous catheter lumens. Particularly, there is a need for studies exclusively in children.

Systematic review: Anastomotic microvascular device
Conclusion: The venous coupler device serves as a powerful instrument in microsurgery by achieving high patency rate. More importantly the data suggests less variation in thrombosis rate compared to hand-sewn venous anastomosis.

Oral anticoagulation in patients with cancer who have no therapeutic or prophylactic indication for anticoagulation.
CONCLUSIONS: Existing evidence does not suggest a mortality benefit from oral anticoagulation in patients with cancer while the risk for bleeding is increased. PMID: 24897382 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Low molecular weight heparin versus unfractionated heparin for perioperative thromboprophylaxis in patients with cancer.
CONCLUSIONS: We found no difference between perioperative thromboprophylaxis with LMWH versus UFH in their effects on mortality, thromboembolic outcomes, major bleeding, or minor bleeding in patients with cancer. Further trials are needed to evaluate the benefits and harms of different heparin thromboprophylaxis strategies in this population more thoroughly. PMID: 24966161 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
