Efficacy of a family-based cardiovascular risk reduction intervention in individuals with a family history of premature coronary heart disease in India (PROLIFIC): an open-label, single-centre, cluster randomised controlled trial
Lancet Glob Health. 2021 Oct;9(10):e1442-e1450. doi: 10.1016/S2214-109X(21)00319-3.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease, a leading cause of death globally, is amenable to lifestyle interventions. The family environment can affect the ability or willingness of individuals to make lifestyle changes. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of a targeted family-based intervention for reduction of total cardiovascular risk in individuals with a family history of premature coronary heart disease.METHODS: We did an open-label, cluster randomised controlled trial (PROLIFIC) in the families (first-degree relatives and spouses, o...

Doxycycline for community treatment of suspected COVID-19 in people at high risk of adverse outcomes in the UK (PRINCIPLE): a randomised, controlled, open-label, adaptive platform trial
Lancet Respir Med. 2021 Jul 27:S2213-2600(21)00310-6. doi: 10.1016/S2213-2600(21)00310-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Doxycycline is often used for treating COVID-19 respiratory symptoms in the community despite an absence of evidence from clinical trials to support its use. We aimed to assess the efficacy of doxycycline to treat suspected COVID-19 in the community among people at high risk of adverse outcomes.METHODS: We did a national, open-label, multi-arm, adaptive platform randomised trial of interventions against COVID-19 in older people (PRINCIPLE) across primary care centres in the UK. Brain injury lab receives additional federal funding to boost research
(University of California - Riverside) Earlier this year, Viji Santhakumar, an associate professor of molecular, cell and systems biology at UC Riverside, received funding from the National Institute of Neurological Disaster and Stroke of the National Institutes of Health, or NIH, to further pursue research on moderate concussive brain injury. Now three scientists in her lab have received federal funding -- no small achievement for a university research group.

Exploring the Use of Brain-Computer Interfaces in Stroke Neurorehabilitation
Biomed Res Int. 2021 Jun 18;2021:9967348. doi: 10.1155/2021/9967348. eCollection 2021.ABSTRACTWith the continuous development of artificial intelligence technology, "brain-computer interfaces" are gradually entering the field of medical rehabilitation. As a result, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have been included in many countries' strategic plans for innovating this field, and subsequently, major funding and talent have been invested in this technology. In neurological rehabilitation for stroke patients, the use of BCIs opens up a new chapter in "top-down" rehabilitation. In our study, we first reviewed the latest BCI ...

City Heat is Worse if You ’re Not Rich or White. The World’s First Heat Officer Wants to Change That
Jane Gilbert knows she doesn’t get the worst of the sticky heat and humidity that stifles Miami each summer. She lives in Morningside, a coastal suburb of historically preserved art deco and Mediterranean-style single-family homes. Abundant trees shade the streets and a bay breeze cools residents when they leave their air conditioned cars and homes. “I live in a place of privilege and it’s a beautiful area,” says Gilbert, 58, over Zoom in early June, shortly after beginning her job as the world’s first chief heat officer, in Miami Dade county. “But you don’t have to go far to see t...

COVID-19 Exposed the Faults in America ’s Elder Care System. This Is Our Best Shot to Fix Them
For the American public, one of the first signs of the COVID-19 pandemic to come was a tragedy at a nursing home near Seattle. On Feb. 29, 2020, officials from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Washington State announced the U.S. had its first outbreak of the novel coronavirus. Three people in the area had tested positive the day before; two of them were associated with Life Care Center of Kirkland, and officials expected more to follow soon. When asked what steps the nursing home could take to control the spread, Dr. Jeff Duchin, health officer for Seattle and King County, said he was working w...

Brain injury research to focus on moderate concussion
(University of California - Riverside) Viji Santhakumar at the University of California, Riverside, has received funding from the National Institute of Neurological Disaster and Stroke to further pursue research on moderate concussive brain injury, which results from car accidents or sports-related concussions. The more than $2.3 million five-year renewal grant will allow Santhakumar's lab to study how inflammatory responses after brain injury contribute to the creation of abnormally connected neurons, and whether this compromises critical memory processing functions.

Featured Review: Endovascular thrombectomy for acute ischaemic stroke
In thisrecently published Cochrane review, authors explored the effects of treating acute ischaemic stroke with endovascular thrombectomy and intra-arterial interventions.First author Melinda Roaldsen said: " This review of endovascular thrombectomy for acute ischaemic stroke strongly reinforces the efficacy and safety of endovascular interventions. Endovascular thrombectomy is a treatment modality in rapid development and continues to gain significance in acute stroke care. This review finds high evidence that endovascular thrombectomy improves functional and neurological outcomes without increasing intracerebral haemorrh...
