Yield of Screening Tests for Systemic Vasculitis in Young Adults with Ischemic Stroke
Systemic vasculitis, which can involve the brain, may be one of the causes of stroke in young adults; therefore, a test panel for systemic vasculitis is considered for some young stroke patients. However, little is known about this test ’s yield as a screening test in young adults with ischemic stroke. We evaluated the yield of a panel for systemic vasculitis as a screening test in young patients with ischemic stroke. Consecutive patients aged 18–45 years with ischemic stroke between January 2010 and December 2017 were included . They all underwent screening tests for systemic vasculitis including rheumatoid factor, an...

Stroke in a Young Patient: A Sentinel Presentation of Neurosyphilis and HIV (P2.109)
Conclusions: Neurosyphilis should be a diagnostic consideration in young patients with ischemic stroke. Clinicians should be aware of the high incidence of concomitant syphilis and HIV in at-risk populations. Effort should be made to inquire about high-risk behaviors and initiate testing for these infections early in the diagnostic workup to avoid missing these crucial diagnoses.Disclosure: Dr. Flaherty has nothing to disclose. Stroke secondary to giant-cell arteritis: A literature review
Exp Ther Med. 2021 Aug;22(2):876. doi: 10.3892/etm.2021.10308. Epub 2021 Jun 15.ABSTRACTStroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. In addition to the classical etiologies of stroke as atherosclerosis and cardioembolism there are many unusual, rare causes, which require a high level of clinical suspicion and further investigations for correct and early diagnosis and adequate treatment. Giant-cell arteritis or temporal arteritis, the most frequent vasculitis in the elderly population is one of the uncommon causes of stroke. In the setting of giant-cell arteritis, stroke more likely affects the vertebrobasil...

Risk factors for ischemic cerebral stroke in patient with acute amaurosis fugax
CONCLUSION: Ischemic stroke and myocardial infarction were diagnosed in 0.3%-0.9% of hospitalized acute AF cases. Presence of hypercoagulable state, systemic vasculitis, CAD, and atherosclerosis each individually increased the risk of ischemic stroke by more than 3-fold; patients with these risk factors and acute AF should be closely monitored for developing acute systemic thrombotic events.PMID:36368408 | DOI:10.1016/j.jcjo.2022.10.010
