Fight Aging! Newsletter, July 24th 2023
In this study, we tested the hypothesis that periodontal disease (PD) as a source of infection alters inflammatory activation and Aβ phagocytosis by the microglial cells. Experimental PD was induced using ligatures in C57BL/6 mice for 1, 10, 20, and 30 days to assess the progression of PD. Animals without ligatures were used as controls. Ligature placement caused progressive periodontal disease and bone resorption that was already significant on day 1 post-ligation and continued to increase until day 30. The severity of periodontal disease increased the frequency of activated microglia in the brains on day 30 by 36...

Why Native Americans Are Dying Sooner
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that American life expectancy had taken a nosedive during the pandemic, with the biggest drop occurring among non-Hispanic American Indians and Alaska Natives. It was reassuring to see coverage of this terrible trend; but largely absent was the context and history underlying these disparities. The reasons why indigenous people were hit hardest by COVID-19 go beyond the fact that they also have very high rates of underlying comorbidities—like obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Instead the roots of health disparities among indigeno...

Turning PBM " Arbitrage " On Its Head: Bypassing Insurance to Save
The word of the day is " arbitrage " . Officially, Merriam-Webster defines the English language word " arbitrage " this way: " The nearly simultaneous purchase and sale of securities or foreign exchange in different markets in order to profit from price discrepancies " . However, arbitrage does not exclusively apply to securities sold on Wall Street. The term has also been adopted by the Pharmacy Benefit Manager ( " PBM " ) industry. But PBM ' s are not Wall Street investment banks. And that ' s something we all need to realize. The PBM Accountability Project 2021 report " Understanding the Evolving Business Model...

Am J Hypertens. 2022 Mar 8;35(3):244-255. doi: 10.1093/ajh/hpab170.ABSTRACTHypertension is highly prevalent in the United States, and many persons with hypertension do not have controlled blood pressure. Self-measured blood pressure monitoring (SMBP), when combined with clinical support, is an evidence-based strategy for lowering blood pressure and improving control in persons with hypertension. For years, there has been support for widespread implementation of SMBP by national organizations and the federal government, and SMBP was highlighted as a primary intervention in the 2020 Surgeon General's Call to Action to Contro...
