Perioperative stroke in patients undergoing elective spinal surgery: a retrospective analysis using the Japanese diagnosis procedure combination database
Conclusions: Perioperative stroke occurred in 0.22 % of patients undergoing spinal surgery. Resection of a spinal cord tumor was associated with increased risk of perioperative stroke as well as advanced age, comorbidities at admission, cervical spine surgery, surgery in a teaching hospital, and length of stay.

Osteoporosis as an independent risk factor for silent brain infarction and white matter changes in men and women: the PRESENT project
Conclusions Severe bone mass loss may be an independent risk factor for brain WMC/SI in men and women. Low BMD may cause brain WMC/SI in the step that leads to stroke. Although there are well-designed studies on the prevention of cerebral infarction in patients with brain WMC/SI, a specific prevention method, such as aspirin, should be used for patients with low BMD who have WMC/SI. Screening for low BMD as an independent vascular risk factor in healthy subjects may be required to prevent stroke.

Increased risk of cardiovascular events in end-stage renal disease patients with osteoporosis: a nationwide population-based cohort study
Conclusions The results showed that osteoporosis was significantly associated with the subsequent risk of cardiovascular events in patients with ESRD. When encountering patients with ESRD and osteoporosis, physicians should be alert to the subsequent cardiovascular risk in incident dialysis patients to prevent the subsequent occurrence of these adverse events.

Outcomes of Chopart Amputation in a Tertiary Referral Diabetic Foot Clinic: Data From a Consecutive Series of 83 Hospitalized Patients
The purpose of the present retrospective study was to evaluate the outcomes (ie, ulcer recurrence, major amputation, death) in diabetic patients undergoing Chopart amputation because of deep infection or gangrene extending to the midfoot. From 2009 to 2011, 83 patients, aged 71.4 ± 9.3 years, underwent a midtarsal amputation and were followed up until December 31, 2012 (mean follow-up 2.8 ± 0.8 years). Of the 83 patients, 26 were female, 61 required insulin, 47 had renal insufficiency, 19 underwent hemodialysis, 65 had hypertension, 34 had a history of cardiac disease, and 4 had a history of stroke.

Incidence And Risk Factors For 30-Day Readmissions After Hip Fracture Surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: The overall rate of readmission following hip fracture surgery was moderate. Surgeons should consider discharge optimization in the at risk cohorts identified here, particularly patients with multiple medical comorbidities or an elevated ASA class, and should focus on wound complications and fall risks in order to minimize readmissions. Further, quality-reporting metrics should account for the risk factors identified here, in order to prevent penalties against surgeons who take on complex patients. Medical Complications After Adult Spinal Deformity Surgery: Incidence, Risk Factors, and Clinical Impact
