Vessel wall MR imaging of aortic arch, cervical carotid and intracranial arteries in patients with embolic stroke of undetermined source: A narrative review
Front Neurol. 2022 Jul 28;13:968390. doi: 10.3389/fneur.2022.968390. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTDespite advancements in multi-modal imaging techniques, a substantial portion of ischemic stroke patients today remain without a diagnosed etiology after conventional workup. Based on existing diagnostic criteria, these ischemic stroke patients are subcategorized into having cryptogenic stroke (CS) or embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS). There is growing evidence that in these patients, non-cardiogenic embolic sources, in particular non-stenosing atherosclerotic plaque, may have significant contributory roles in their isc...

Dual anti-platelet therapy for secondary prevention in intracranial atherosclerotic disease: a network meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: DAPT is more effective than SAPT for secondary stroke prevention in patients with symptomatic ICAS, without increasing the risk of haemorrhage.REGISTRATION: Prospero/CRD42019140033.PMID:35958039 | PMC:PMC9358568 | DOI:10.1177/17562864221114716

Passive smoking may be associated with bleeding of cerebral arteriovenous malformation in non-smoking women: a retrospective analysis
CONCLUSION: Passive smoking may increase the risk of AVM bleeding in non-smoking women. This increased risk may be related to the inflammatory response, vascular wall damage, hemodynamic disorders, changes in atherosclerosis and changes in gene expression caused by passive smoking.PMID:35946710 | DOI:10.1590/0004-282X-ANP-2021-0216

Predictors of Progression in Intraplaque Hemorrhage Volume in Patients With Carotid Atherosclerosis: A Serial Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study
CONCLUSIONS: Taking an antiplatelet agent at baseline, a baseline history of current or past smoking and larger baseline carotid plaque-containing vessel wall volume were independently predictive of plaques being in the progressed IPH group. Our findings indicate that awareness and management of such risk factors may reduce the risk of intraplaque hemorrhage progression.PMID:35911916 | PMC:PMC9334903 | DOI:10.3389/fneur.2022.815150

Changes of Atherosclerotic Plaque in Cerebral Artery Stenosis According to High-Resolution MR Imaging
This study investigates risk factors that rely on high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI). Patients with cerebral artery stenosis who had undergone HR-MRI at least twice were included. The demographics, risk factors, and proportion of patients with cerebral artery stenosis were investigated. The association between atherosclerotic plaque characteristics and the progression or regression of artery stenosis was also analyzed. A total of 42 patients were analyzed, with a median follow-up of 16.88 ± 12.53 months. The mean age of all subjects was 63.1 ± 9.15 years, and 83.3% of them were male. The incidences of st...

Association of Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol with Risk of Coronary Heart Disease and Stroke among Middle-Aged Japanese Workers: An Analysis using Inverse Probability Weighting
CONCLUSION: In middle-aged Japanese workers, LDL-C was significantly and positively associated with CHD, but not with ischemic stroke. LDL-C was inversely significantly associated with intracerebral hemorrhage.PMID:35831131 | DOI:10.5551/jat.63519

High serum total cholesterol associated with good outcome in endovascular thrombectomy for acute large artery occlusion
CONCLUSIONS: A high TC level was associated with favorable outcomes after EVT, especially in patients with cardioembolism and complete recanalization.PMID:35831632 | DOI:10.1007/s10072-022-06269-4

The association between mitochondrial DNA abundance and stroke: A combination of multivariable-adjusted survival and Mendelian randomization analyses
CONCLUSIONS: Although the results from both multivariable-adjusted prospective and basis MR analyses did not show an association between low mtDNA and increased risk of ischemic stroke, in-depth MR sensitivity analyses may suggest evidence for a causal relationship.PMID:35793595 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2022.06.1012
