Computed Tomography Abnormalities and Epidemiology of Adult Patients Presenting With First Seizure to the Emergency Department in Qatar / Epidemiología y Alteraciones en la Tomografía Computarizada de los Pacientes Adultos Atendidos por una Primera Crisis Epiléptica en un Servicio de Urgencias en Qatar.
ConclusionsAdults who presented with first seizure to the ED in Qatar had a young male predominance, and a high proportion of brain CT scans were reported as abnormal. It is recommended that all such patients in this population should undergo prompt CT scanning in the ED, but the utility of routine electrolyte tests requires further investigation.

Spot Sign on 90-Second Delayed Computed Tomography Angiography Improves Sensitivity for Hematoma Expansion and Mortality: Prospective Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— We demonstrate improved sensitivity for predicting hematoma expansion and poor outcome by adding a 90-second delayed CTA, which may enhance selection of patients who may benefit from hemostatic therapy.

Endovascular recanalization of complete subacute to chronic atherosclerotic occlusions of intracranial arteries
Conclusions Endovascular recanalization can be performed with an acceptable safety profile in selected patients with symptomatic complete subacute to chronic intracranial atherosclerotic occlusion. Additional studies are warranted to investigate whether this treatment compares favorably with best medical management.

Acid‐Suppressive Medication Use in Acute Stroke and Hospital‐Acquired Pneumonia
ABSTRACT Objective: Pneumonia is a morbid complication of stroke, but evidence‐based strategies for its prevention are lacking. Acid‐suppressive medications have been associated with increased risk for nosocomial pneumonia in hospitalized patients. It is unclear whether these results can be extrapolated to stroke patients, where other factors strongly modulate pneumonia risk. We investigated the association between acid‐suppressive medication and hospital‐acquired pneumonia in patients with acute stroke. Methods: All patients hospitalized with acute ischemic stroke or intracerebral hemorrhage in a large, urban acad...

Diagnostic Value of S100B Protein in the Differential Diagnosis of Acute Vertigo in the Emergency Department / El Valor Diagnóstico de la Proteína S100B en el Diagnóstico Diferencial del Vértigo Agudo en el Servicio de Urgencias
ConclusionsTo the best of our knowledge this is the first study assessing the utility of serum S100B levels for diagnosis of acute‐onset vertigo. Serum S100B levels are associated with the presence of central causes of vertigo on cranial MRI. However, serum S100B levels are not sufficiently sensitive to exclude candidates from cranial MRI.

Protocol for a prospective, multicentre registry study of stenting for symptomatic intracranial artery stenosis in China
This study aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of endovascular stenting for patients with symptomatic intracranial artery stenosis and poor collaterals in China and to identify the characteristics of the population that would benefit the most from endovascular stenting in Chinese patients. Methods and analysis This multicentre prospective registry study will involve 20 stroke centres in China, and plans to recruit 300 patients into the registry. Patients with ≥70% stenosis and symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic disease caused by hypoperfusion combined with poor collaterals who met the inclusion criteria and ...

Variability in Outcome After Elective Cerebral Aneurysm Repair in High-Volume Academic Medical Centers Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— There is notable interhospital heterogeneity in outcomes among even the largest volume unruptured intracranial aneurysm referral centers. Although further regionalization may be needed, mandatory participation in prospective, adjudicated registries will be necessary to reliably identify factors associated with superior outcomes.

Stroke And Cerebrovascular Risk Factors Knowledge In Patients Admitted To A Cardiovascular Ward. (P1.135)
Conclusion: Even in these selected population, with previous or current CVD, a large amount of RF and a high rate of previous medical consultations, knowledge about stroke showed to be very low indicating a poor quality of preventive measures and the need to emphasize educational interventions.Disclosure: Dr. Muñoz has nothing to disclose. NIH Stroke Scale Change Correlates with Length of Stay in Intensive Care Unit Stroke Patients (P3.099)
Conclusion: NIHSS change appears to be related to the ICU LOS and discharge disposition. Application of Shewhart control charts may provide valuable additional information providing us with opportunities to improve health care delivery. In this study, control charts found wider variation in NIHSS over hospital stays for ischemic stroke compared to intracerebral hemorrhage, suggesting that for ischemic patients there are more opportunities to secure a good outcome as well as more risks of clinical worsening, depending on care provision.Disclosure: Dr. Krishnamohan has nothing to disclose. Clinical Experience of Life-Threatening Dabigatran-Related Bleeding at a Large, Tertiary Care, Academic Medical Center: a Case Series.
CONCLUSION: Reversal strategies for dabigatran-related bleeding events at our institution are highly variable. Intracranial hemorrhage in patients on dabigatran was associated with 43 % mortality. Patients with severe dabigatran-related bleeding may benefit from a standardized approach to treatment. PMID: 24385325 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Transition of European Cooperative Acute Stroke Study III Results to Clinical Practice: Ninety-Day Outcomes in a US Cohort Brief Reports
Conclusions— For patients treated with intravenous tissue-type plasminogen activator 3 to 4.5 hours from onset in everyday practice in the United States, there is no evidence for increased risk or worse outcomes compared with standard treatment ≤3 hours.

Eligibility Determination for Intravenous Thrombolysis Based on Radiology Interpretation Report of the Head CT Scan in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke
CONCLUSIONOur study demonstrates that administering IV t‐PA to patients based on the stroke team's interpretation of the CT scan versus review of the radiology interpretation does not lead to significant differences in clinical outcome, aICH, or sICH.

Stroke Mimics under the Drip-and-Ship Paradigm
Conclusion: The drip-and-ship paradigm and any psychiatric history predict the diagnosis of SM. None of the SM had thrombolysis-related complications, and all were discharged to home. These findings may explain the superior outcomes associated with the drip-and-ship paradigm in the treatment for AIS.
