Burden of stroke in Egypt: current status and opportunities
Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries have a diversity of populations with similar life style, dietary habits, and vascular risk factors that may influence stroke risk, prevalence, types, and disease burden. Egypt is the most populated nation in the Middle East with an estimated 85.5 million people. In Egypt, according to recent estimates, the overall prevalence rate of stroke is high with a crude prevalence rate of 963/100 000 inhabitants. In spite of disease burden, yet there is a huge evidence practice gap. The recommended treatments for ischemic stroke that are guideline include systematic supportive care in ...

Results of Systemizing Stroke Care in Acute Endovascular Patients (P2.308)
CONCLUSIONS: Implementation of a streamlined routing and transfer process significantly shortened treatment times and decreased complications in our stroke patients. Our pre-established expedited triage, imaging, stroke physician expertise, and mechanical clot retrieval proficiency resulted in more favorable outcomes. With these changes, patients receive the most specialized endovascular care in a highly efficient manner.Disclosure: Dr. Hawkins has nothing to disclose. Dr. Martin has nothing to disclose. Implementation of a Structured Guideline-Based Program for the Secondary Prevention of Ischemic Stroke in China Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— The implementation of a program to improve adherence to secondary ischemic stroke prevention efforts in China is feasible, but these programs had only a limited impact on adherence and no impact on 1-year outcomes. Further development of a structured program to reduce vascular events after stroke is needed. Clinical Trial Registration—URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00664846.

Perception Of Stroke Symptoms And Utilization Of Emergency Medical Systems In Argentina (P7.132)
CONCLUSIONS:These results suggest a low level of stroke symptoms awareness in our country even in a population of middle/high socioeconomic level. The role and procedures of EMS in Argentina should be revised as early arrival and treatment appear to be associated with no utilization of them.Study Supported by:Disclosure: Dr. Hawkes has nothing to disclose. Socioeconomic Inequalities in the Prescription of Oral Anticoagulants in Stroke Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Clinical Sciences
Conclusion— Differences by age, income, education, and country of birth were found in the prescribing of OACs after stroke. Differences were not explained by common risk factors. This indicates socioeconomic inequalities in the prescribing of preventive treatment after stroke.

Long-Term Effect of Participation in an Early Exercise and Education Program on Clinical Outcomes and Cost Implications, in Patients with TIA and Minor, Non-Disabling Stroke
AbstractParticipation in exercise and education programs following transient ischemic attack (TIA) or minor stroke may decrease cardiovascular disease risk. The purpose of this study was to assess the long-term effect (3.5  years) of an exercise and education program administered soon after TIA or minor stroke diagnosis on clinical outcome measures (stroke classification and number, patient deaths, hospital/emergency department admission) and cost implications obtained from standard hospital records. Hospital records were screened for 60 adults (male,n = 31; 71 ± 10 years), diagnosed with TIA or non-disabling stroke...

Thrombolytic Utilization in Ischemic Stroke Is Significantly Higher in US Hospitals with Neurology Residency Program (S02.006)
CONCLUSIONS: Stroke care at NR hospitals is associated with an increased thrombolytic utilization rate. The increased tPA utilization at NR between 2002-2006 may be related to the rapid increase in Primary Stroke Centers across the country.Disclosure: Dr. Moradiya has nothing to disclose. Periodontal Disease and Recurrent Vascular Events in Stroke/Transient Ischemic Attack Patients
Periodontal disease (PD) has been shown to be associated with incident stroke. We investigated whether PD is independently associated with recurrent vascular events and certain inflammatory markers in stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA) patients. In this prospective, longitudinal, hospital-based cohort study, PD was assessed in stroke/TIA patients. High periodontal disease (HPD) was defined as the highest tertile of extent (% of sites) with an attachment loss of 5 mm or more. Serum interleukin-6 (IL-6), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and soluble intracellular adhesion molecule 1 (s-ICAM) were measured. The patient...

Peripheral pulse measurement after ischemic stroke: A feasibility study
Conclusion: With a low rate of false-positive results, MPP offers an easy, ubiquitously available, noninvasive, first-step screening tool to guide ECG diagnostics for pAF after ischemic stroke. The data warrant a prospective trial evaluating the efficacy of MPP-guided ECG diagnostics in secondary prevention after stroke, which is now underway. Classification of evidence: This study provides Class I evidence that MPP by patients or relatives accurately distinguishes AF from normal heart rhythm as compared with continuous ECG.

Time is Brain: A Quality Improvement Project to Improve Stroke Outcomes by Educating EMS. (P4.308)
Conclusions: Acute stroke management requires a multidisciplinary team effort involving the EMS and stroke team. Contacting the family is essential to review contraindications in aphasic patients. Educating EMS about acute stroke management can help prevent delays in administrating IV rtPA. At our center we were able to decrease the number of delays by involving and educating the EMS.Disclosure: Dr. Singh has nothing to disclose. Dr. Sofat has nothing to disclose. NIH Stroke Scale Assessment via Tablet-based Mobile Telestroke During Ambulance Transport Is Feasible - pilot data from the Improving Treatment with Rapid Evaluation of Acute stroke via mobile Telemedecine (iTREAT) study (S21.003)
CONCLUSIONS: In this simulation study, NIHSS scores performed during rural ambulance transport using our low-cost, off-the-shelf tablet-based mobile telestroke system correlated well with face-to-face assessments. These results support further prospective research of mobile telemedicine in live patient settings of prehospital stroke care.Disclosure: Dr. Padrick has received research support from the American Heart Association. A multi-modal approach to quality improvement: reducing 'door-to-ct' time in potenitally thombolysable stroke patients
Conclusion Early thrombolysis has been shown to improve outcomes in patients with ischaemic stroke.2 Reducing ‘Door-to-CT' scan time in the ED is an important step in enabling a reduction in the overall DTN time. This can be achieved by stream-lining key processes in the patient journey through the ED. A multi-modal approach ensured this change was introduced safely and effectively whilst re-enforcing a core change to standard working practice. Further work on process mapping and the delivery of thrombolysis is the next obvious step in further reduction in DTN time. Figure 1Quality Improvement Run Chart 'Door-t...
