The relationship between social functioning and subjective memory complaints in older persons: a population ‐based longitudinal cohort study
ConclusionsGood social functioning is associated with less incident SMC and more SMC recovery over a follow‐up period of 1.5 years. Albeit future confirmative studies are needed, we argue for targeting also social functioning when designing multidomain interventions to prevent or slow down cognitive decline. Perception of health-related quality of life using the EURO-QOL in older adults in Bogot á, Colombia
Conclusions In our study, debilitating and highly symptomatic diseases like JD, COPD and cognitive impairment significantly increase the odds of poor HRQOL. The EuroQol is a useful instrument that can help clinicians in Colombia better assess quality of life among older adults.

Multimorbidity is associated with anxiety in older adults in the Health and Retirement Study
ConclusionNumber of medical conditions and specific conditions are associated with increased occurrence of elevated anxiety. Compared with elevated depressive symptoms, anxiety is associated with greater multimorbidity. As anxiety and depression cause significant morbidity, it may be beneficial to consider these mental health symptoms when evaluating older adults with multimorbidity. Published 2016. Neuroanatomic pathways associated with monoaminergic dysregulation after stroke
ConclusionsMonoaminergic neuronal pathways are controlled by both receptor‐mediated feedback mechanisms and turnover; thus, depletion of monoamines is not the only cause of depression and apathy. Moreover, the monoamine neuronal network might be divided into two branches, catecholamine (NA and DA) and 5‐HT, both of which are anatomically and functionally interconnected and could respectively influence apathetic and affective symptoms of depression.

Multimorbidity Combinations and Disability in Older Adults
Conclusions: Clinicians stand to gain from a better understanding of which disease combinations are more and less disabling among older adults. Understanding how multimorbidity combinations relate to functional status is an important step towards reducing disability and sustaining independent living among older adults.

Diabetes Mellitus as a Risk Factor for Development of Depressive Symptoms in a Population‐Based Cohort of Older Mexican Americans
ConclusionDiabetes mellitus increased the risk of developing depressive symptoms in older Mexican Americans. Older Latinos with diabetes mellitus should be screened for depressive symptoms and prioritized for close follow‐up, potentially through greater reliance on team‐based models of care.

Variation by Social Support in the Risk for Depression Following a Heart Attack or Stroke: Preliminary Findings From the National Health and Aging Trends Study
Introduction: Although the association of depression with heart attacks and strokes is well characterized, we know relatively little about how social support may modify this risk. We hypothesize that a heart attack or stroke will place older adults with a low level of social support at greater risk of developing depression compared to older adults with a high level of support.

Clinical Advances in ECT Focused on Elderly Patients
Abstract: William McDonald will moderate a discussion of the latest clinical advances in ECT based on new research findings. George Petrides will outline the current understanding of the mechanisms of action of ECT and the implications in the elderly for responding optimally to ECT. Adriana Hermida will discuss the efficacy of ECT in treating neurobehavioral symptoms in elderly patients with neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and stroke. Charles Kellner will present the most recent data from the Consortium on Research in ECT (CORE) group on the Prolonging Remission in Depressed Elderly ...

Multiple Chronic Conditions in Older Adults with Acute Coronary Syndromes
Older adults presenting with acute coronary syndromes (ACSs) often have multiple chronic conditions (MCCs). In addition to traditional cardiovascular (CV) risk factors (ie, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes), common CV comorbidities include heart failure, stroke, and atrial fibrillation, whereas prevalent non-CV comorbidities include chronic kidney disease, anemia, depression, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The presence of MCCs affects the presentation (eg, increased frequency of type 2 myocardial infarctions [MIs]), clinical course, and prognosis of ACS in older adults. In general, higher comorbidity ...

Depression in old age, part 2 : Comorbidity and treatment.
Abstract Depression in later life unfavorably impacts on the prognosis of comorbid somatic medical conditions. There are mutually reciprocal risk relationships with several frequently occurring medical conditions, such as diabetes, ischemic heart disease, stroke and Parkinson's disease. A wide range of psychological and psychosocial interventions, drug treatment and other biological interventions are available for treatment, including special interventions for enhancement of effectiveness and therapy resistance.
