Effectiveness of 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine on all-cause pneumonia in children under 5  years in Shanghai, China: An observational study
CONCLUSIONS: PCV13 vaccination among children aged 0-5 years substantially reduced the incidence of all-cause pneumonia. Direct immunization of children under 5 years is an effective strategy to combat outpatient pneumonia, and hospitalized pneumonia.PMID:37620204 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.08.041

20 ‑Valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine: Pediatric First Approval
This article summarizes the milestones in the development of PCV20 leading to this first pediatric approval for active immunization for the prevention of IPD and otitis media caused by S. pneumoniae.PMID:37440125 | DOI:10.1007/s40272-023-00584-9

Non-protective immunity after standard pneumococcal vaccination series identified as a potential contributing risk factor for refractory otolaryngologic conditions in children
CONCLUSION: In pediatric patients with recurrent infectious otolaryngologic disease refractory to traditional medical and surgical therapy, inadequate responses to pneumococcal vaccination may be revealed. This correlation represents a potential pathway for diagnosis and therapy.PMID:37386844 | DOI:10.1177/00034894231182745

A novel immuno-molecular strategy for the detection of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes in human cerebrospinal and middle ear fluids
J Immunol Methods. 2023 Jun 20:113516. doi: 10.1016/j.jim.2023.113516. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStreptococcus pneumoniae is one of the most common microorganisms causing acute otitis media (AOM) in children. While bacterial culture of middle ear fluid (MEF) is the gold standard to detect the etiological organisms, several host and pathogen factors impact the survival of the organisms resulting in false negatives. To overcome this limitation, we have developed and validated an innovative multiplex immuno-molecular assay to screen and detect the S. pneumoniae 15-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV15; STs 1, 3, 4,...

A retrospective cohort study investigating the comparative effectiveness of pneumococcal vaccines against hospitalisation with otitis media and pneumonia in New Zealand
CONCLUSION: These results should offer reassurance about the equivalence of these pneumococcal vaccines against the broader pneumococcal disease outcomes OM and pneumonia.PMID:37244807 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.05.040

Immune responses and protection against Streptococcus pneumoniae elicited by recombinant Bordetella pertussis adenylate cyclase (CyaA) carrying fragments of pneumococcal surface protein A, PspA
Vaccine. 2023 May 24:S0264-410X(23)00570-4. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.05.031. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStreptococcus pneumoniae is a common agent of important human diseases such as otitis media, pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis. Current available vaccines that target capsular polysaccharides induce protection against invasive disease and nasopharyngeal colonization in children, yet their efficacy is limited to the serotypes included in the formulations. The virulence factor Pneumococcal Surface Protein A (PspA) interacts with host immune system and helps the bacteria to evade phagocytosis. Due to its essential role...
