Remedies for Kidney Ailments in Physica by Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179)
CONCLUSIONS: Physica provides a reliable account of medicine in the 12th century as it was practiced by the clergy for generations. It also incorporates Hildegard's personal observations and contemporary folk remedies. This fact is supported by the limited similarity of nephrological remedies in Hildegard's Physica with the respective remedies in De Materia Medica.PMID:37496345 | DOI:10.6002/ect.IAHNCongress.13

Interstitial Nephritis: Wherefrom, Wherein, and Whereto
Exp Clin Transplant. 2023 Jun;21(Suppl 2):42-45. doi: 10.6002/ect.IAHNCongress.10.ABSTRACTAbnormalities of the renal interstitium were noted early while identifying chronic kidney disease in 1827; however, interest in glomerular and vascular lesions was then distracted from their further study. As a complication of scarlet fever, interstitial lesions attracted attention in 1859 and came to be defined as acute interstitial nephritis in 1898. The chronic form of interstitial nephritis was traditionally attributed to pyelonephritis until the advent of kidney biopsy in the 1950s, when interstitial lesions were recognized as an...

Franz Volhard: 150th Birth Anniversary of a Father of Nephrology and Hypertension
Exp Clin Transplant. 2023 Jun;21(Suppl 2):38-41. doi: 10.6002/ect.IAHNCongress.09.ABSTRACTFranz Volhard (May 2, 1872, to May 24, 1950) was a German clinician and researcher who made outstanding contributions to the field of nephrology and hyper-tension. His studies led to important developments in knowledge about the pathophysiology of the kidney and its relationship to cardiovascular disease. He contributed to a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying renovascular hypertension by explaining the crucial relationship between the decrease in renal blood flow and the increase in blood pressure. He also introduced a ...

Urinary System Problems in al-R ãzî's Book, Man lã yaḥḍuruhu al-ṭabîb: Practical Advice for Those Who Cannot Access Physicians and Medical Recourses
CONCLUSIONS: Rather than theoretical and etiological explanations for urinary problems, al-Rãzî provides accessible and applicable practical drugs and approaches for the general public, which can be considered suitable for the purpose mentioned in al-Rãzî's introduction to the book.PMID:37496333 | DOI:10.6002/ect.IAHNCongress.01

SARS-CoV-2 infection: a possible trigger for the recurrence of IgA nephropathy after kidney transplantation?
J Nephrol. 2023 Jun 21. doi: 10.1007/s40620-023-01684-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTImmunoglobulin A nephropathy, the most common primary glomerulonephritis worldwide, is a leading cause of chronic kidney disease and end-stage kidney failure. Several cases of immunoglobulin A nephropathy relapse in native kidneys have been described after COVID-19 vaccination or SARS-CoV-2 infection. Here, we report the case of a 52-year-old kidney transplant recipient who had a stable transplant function for more than 14 years, with a glomerular filtration rate above 30 ml/min/1.73 m2. The patient had been vaccinated against COVID-19 f...

Acute tubulointerstitial nephritis possibly caused by vedolizumab for ulcerative colitis in a kidney transplant recipient: A case report
Clin Nephrol. 2023 Jun 8. doi: 10.5414/CN111029. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVedolizumab, which is used to effectively treat ulcerative colitis (UC), is a humanized monoclonal antibody that specifically inhibits α4β7 integrin on lymphocytes and prevents lymphocyte migration into the intestinal tissues. Herein, we report a case of acute tubulointerstitial nephritis (ATIN) probably caused by vedolizumab in a kidney transplant recipient (KR) with UC. Approximately 4 years after kidney transplantation, the patient developed UC and was treated initially with mesalazine. Treatment continued with the addition of infliximab la...
