Statins in stroke.
Conclusion: Treatment with statins prevents ischemic stroke, especially in patients with high cardiovascular risk and established atherosclerotic disease. It seems that both lipid lowering and pleiotropic effects contribute to these effects. PMID: 31218948 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Circulating Fetuin-A and Risk of Ischemic Stroke in Women Proteomics and Protein Markers
CONCLUSIONS: In this sample of women, fetuin-A was not significantly associated with risk of ischemic stroke. Further research is needed to explore this association.

HDL cholesterol efflux capacity and phospholipid content are associated with the severity of acute ischemic stroke and predict its outcome
CONCLUSIONS: Changes in CEC and composition of HDL appear to be associated with the severity and outcome of acute ischemic stroke and could represent biomarkers that may inform risk stratification and management strategies in these patients.PMID:36657609 | DOI:10.1016/j.cca.2023.117229

Assessment of atherosclerosis in ischemic stroke by means of ultrasound of extracranial/intracranial circulation and serum, urine, and tissue biomarkers
Curr Med Chem. 2022 Aug 17. doi: 10.2174/0929867329666220817123442. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIt is a common practice to take into consideration: age, diabetes, smoking, treated and untreated systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol for the prediction of atherosclerosis and stroke. There are, however, ultrasound markers in use for the assessment of atherosclerosis and the evaluation of stroke risk. Two areas of investigation are of interest: the carotid artery and the intracranial arterial circulation. Again, within the domain of the carotid artery, two ultrasonic markers have at...

Omentin-1: protective impact on ischemic stroke via ameliorating atherosclerosis.
This study is the first to summarize the comprehensive mechanisms between omentin-1 and atherosclerosis and to review the shielding effect of omentin-1 on IS. We shed light on omentin-1 as a novel therapeutic target for combating IS. PMID: 33607071 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

LOX-1 in atherosclerotic disease.
Abstract Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL) exhibits various biological activities and accumulates in atheromas. LOX-1 (lectin-like oxidized LDL receptor) is the receptor that mediates oxidized LDL activity in vascular endothelial cells. Activation of LOX-1 results in oxidized LDL-induced endothelial dysfunction and hyperlipidemia-induced vascular lipid deposition. We hypothesized that LOX-1 is a candidate risk factor beyond LDL cholesterol (LDLC) and developed a novel assay to quantify LOX-1 ligand containing apoB (LAB). In men from the United States, serum LAB showed a significant positive association with c...

Association between cardiometabolic index and atherosclerotic progression in patients with peripheral arterial disease.
CONCLUSION: CMI was shown to be associated with the degrees of atherosclerosis in the common carotid artery and ischemia in leg arteries and is therefore a useful discriminator of atherosclerotic progression in patients with PAD. PMID: 25920694 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Use of Pharmacogenetic Information in the Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease Reviews
BACKGROUND: In 1964, Robert A. O'Reilly's research group identified members of a family who required remarkably high warfarin doses (up to 145 mg/day, 20 times the average dose) to achieve appropriate anticoagulation. Since this time, pharmacogenetics has become a mainstay of cardiovascular science, and genetic variants have been implicated in several fundamental classes of medications used in cardiovascular medicine. CONTENT: In this review, we discuss genetic variants that affect drug response to 3 classes of cardiovascular drugs: statins, platelet P2Y12 inhibitors, and anticoagulants. These genetic variations have phar...

Impact of Red Wine Consumption on Cardiovascular Health.
Abstract The devastating effects of heavy alcohol drinking have been long time recognized. In the last decades, potential benefits of modest red wine drinking were suggested. In European countries in which red wide intake is not negligible (such as France), the association between cholesterol and cardiovascular (CV) risk was less evident, suggesting the action of some protective molecules in red wine or other foods and drinks. Epidemiological and mechanistic evidence of a J-shaped relationship between red wine intake and CV risk further supported the "French paradox". Specific components of red wine both in vitro ...

Molecules, Vol. 23, Pages 303: Optimization of the Preparation Conditions of Borneol-Modified Ginkgolide Liposomes by Response Surface Methodology and Study of Their Blood Brain Barrier Permeability
Liuqing Di Ginkgolides (GG), containing ginkgolide A (GA), ginkgolide B (GB) and ginkgolide C (GC), are mainly prescribed for ischemic stroke and cerebral infarction. However, the ginkgolides can hardly pass the blood-brain barrier (BBB) into the brain. The purpose of this study was to prepare borneol-modified ginkgolides liposomes (GGB-LPs) to study whether borneol could enhance the transport of ginkgolides across the BBB. The preparation conditions of GGB-LPs were optimized by a response surface-central composite design. Also, pharmacokinetics and biodistribution studies of GGB-LPs were conducted using UPLC-MS. The ...

Direct Versus Calculated LDL Cholesterol and C-Reactive Protein in Cardiovascular Disease Risk Assessment in the Framingham Offspring Study Lipids, Lipoproteins, and Cardiovascular Risk Factors
CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicate that the Denka Seiken direct LDL-C and Dade Behring hsCRP measurements add significant, but modest, information about CVD risk, compared to standard risk factors and/or calculated LDL-C.
