Platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor tirofiban in clopidogrel-na ïve patients undergoing elective percutaneous coronary intervention
CONCLUSION: Ad-hoc PCI in clopidogrel-naïve patients who were treated with high-dose bolus of tirofiban followed by a clopidogrel loading dose immediately after the procedure appeared to be safe.PMID:37713051 | DOI:10.1007/s12471-023-01810-2

Association of Coronary Artery Calcium Detected by Routine Ungated CT Imaging With Cardiovascular Outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: Incidental CAC ≥100 was associated with an increased risk of all-cause death and adverse cardiovascular outcomes, beyond traditional risk factors. DL-CAC from routine non-ECG-gated CTs identifies patients at increased cardiovascular risk and holds promise as a tool for opportunistic screening to facilitate earlier intervention.PMID:37704309 | DOI:10.1016/j.jacc.2023.06.040

Novel concept of less invasive concomitant surgical aortic valve replacement and coronary artery bypass grafting avoiding full median sternotomy
AbstractIn the last decades, minimally invasive procedures have been developed in the therapy of aortic valve disorders. Recently, a novel concept of minimally invasive coronary revascularization in multivessel disease via left anterior mini-thoracotomy demonstrated promising results. Full median sternotomy, as a very invasive procedure, is the standard approach in concomitant surgical aortic valve replacement (sAVR) and coronary bypass grafting (CABG). The aim of our study was to show that the combination of minimal invasive aortic valve replacement via upper mini-sternotomy and coronary artery bypass grafting via left an...

Vitamin E supplementation (alone or with other antioxidants) and stroke: a meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Supplementation with vitamin E alone is not associated with stroke reduction. Instead, supplementation of vitamin E with other antioxidants reduces the incidence of ischemic stroke but increases the risk of hemorrhagic stroke, cancelling any beneficial effect derived. Thus, vitamin E is not recommended in stroke prevention.SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION: PROSPERO registration no. CRD42022258259.PMID:37698992 | DOI:10.1093/nutrit/nuad114

The Impact of Social Determinants of Health and Lifestyle on the Association of Lipoprotein(a) with Myocardial Infarction and Stroke
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: SDOH and lifestyle factors were predictors for MI and stroke that did not impact the association between Lp(a) and cardiovascular events. Our findings support that Lp(a) is an independent risk factor for MI and possibly stroke.PMID:37693416 | PMC:PMC10491356 | DOI:10.1101/2023.09.01.23294968

Is Hypertension Diagnostic Testing and Diagnosis Associated with Psychological Distress?
CONCLUSIONS: The hypertension diagnostic process did not lead to short-term or intermediate-term changes in self-reported HRQOL. However, BP-related worry increased short-term and persisted at 6 months among individuals with a new hypertension diagnosis. Results warrant validation in more representative populations and additional exploration of the impacts of this worry on psychological well-being and hypertension control.PMID:37688515 | DOI:10.1093/ajh/hpad083

Long-term efficacy and safety of early alogliptin initiation in subjects with type 2 diabetes: an extension of the SPEAD-A study
Sci Rep. 2023 Sep 5;13(1):14649. doi: 10.1038/s41598-023-41036-1.ABSTRACTWe previously reported in the study of preventive effects of alogliptin on diabetic atherosclerosis (SPEAD-A) that alogliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, attenuated the progression of carotid atherosclerosis in subjects with type 2 diabetes and no history of cardiovascular disease. This extension study of the SPEAD-A trial investigated whether early alogliptin initiation improved long-term cardiovascular outcomes. The SPEAD-A trial randomized 341 subjects with type 2 diabetes to either alogliptin or conventional treatment to investiga...

Microfluidic-to-macrofluidic: A simple < em > in vitro < /em > model of atherosclerosis induced by fluidic stimulation
Biomicrofluidics. 2023 Aug 29;17(4):044106. doi: 10.1063/5.0155267. eCollection 2023 Jul.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis is the narrowing of the arteries due to the formation of fatty plaques, which is the main cause of myocardial infarction and stroke. It is important to develop an in vitro model that can combine multiple-type cell co-culture, vessel wall-like structure, and fluid condition to simulate the processes of atherosclerosis. Herein, we used a simple microfluidic chip made of three polydimethylsiloxane layers to co-culture endothelial and smooth muscle cells in a flat rectangular microchannel. After being connected with...

Causal associations between type 1 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases: a Mendelian randomization study
CONCLUSION: This MR study provided evidence supporting the causal effect of T1DM on peripheral atherosclerosis and coronary atherosclerosis, with hypertension partly mediating this effect.PMID:37659996 | DOI:10.1186/s12933-023-01974-6
