Hematologic Emergencies in the Postoperative Neurointensive Care Unit Setting: Illustrative Case Series and Differential Diagnosis
Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), a consumptive coagulopathy, occurs as a complication of various conditions. The coagulation pathway is activated leading to formation of fibrin clots that are then released into the circulation. This results in ischemia and subsequent organ failure along with simultaneous consumption of platelets and coagulation factors leading to hemorrhage.1 Diagnostic criteria for DIC include thrombocytopenia, prolonged prothrombin time, reduced fibrinogen levels, and increase in fibrinogen degradation products.
