Stroke-Related Hospitalization and Mortality After a Kidney Allograft: A Population-Cohort Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Fatal and nonfatal stroke-related events are common among kidney allograft recipients. Further research is warranted to allow better risk stratification and facilitate clinical trials for risk attenuation of stroke after a kidney transplant. Excess Stroke Deaths in Kidney Transplant Recipients: A Retrospective Population-based Cohort Study Using Data Linkage
Conclusions. Kidney transplant recipients had excess stroke deaths, particularly at younger ages and women. Preexisting cerebrovascular disease was a potentially modifiable risk factor for stroke death, suggesting further studies of secondary stroke prevention for kidney transplant recipients.

Heat Stroke as a Cause of Liver Failure and Evaluation of Liver Transplant.
Abstract Heat stroke is a multiple organ dysfunction syndrome of poorly understood pathogenesis. Exertional heat stroke with acute liver failure is a rarely reported condition. Liver transplant has been recommended as treatment in cases of severe liver dysfunction; however, there are only 5 described cases of long-term survival after this procedure in patients with heat stroke. Here, we present 2 cases of young athletes who developed heat stroke. Both patients developed acute liver failure and were listed for liver transplant. Liver function tests of one patient improved, and he was discharged on postoperative day...

Stroke and kidney transplantation
Curr Opin Organ Transplant. 2023 Jun 23. doi: 10.1097/MOT.0000000000001078. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review will focus on the epidemiological data, risk factors, and management of stroke before and after kidney transplant. Stroke is highly prevalent in waitlisted patients as well as kidney transplant recipients and is associated with impaired transplant outcomes. Multiple traditional, nontraditional, and transplanted risk factors increase the risk of stroke.RECENT FINDINGS: Although the risk of stroke is reduced after kidney transplantation compared with remaining on dialysis, the morbidity and...

Five-Year Follow-Up on Transplanted Organs From Donors After Brain Death After Acute Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: The 5-year follow-up showed that organs from 14 brain-dead donors improved and saved 19 lives, with 17 patients receiving kidney transplants and 2 patients receiving liver transplants. Another 7 patients had only partially improved quality of life. PMID: 28447929 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
