The radiology quality assurance process in the Yorkshire Lung Screening Trial, and findings from the baseline round of low dose CT screening for lung cancer
CONCLUSION: The described process attempts to minimise bias in retrospective review of screening scans, and may represent a framework for future QA of national screening programmes.ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: This study describes a structured QA process for a lung cancer screening programme, involving blinded second-read of LDCT screening scans to ensure fair, constructive audit of clinical performance.PMID:37656217 | DOI:10.1259/bjr.20230126

Associations between cardiorespiratory fitness in youth and the incidence of site-specific cancer in men: a cohort study with register linkage
CONCLUSION: We report a number of protective associations between higher CRF in healthy young men and the subsequent hazard of site-specific cancers. These results have implications for public health policymaking, strengthening the incentive to promote health through improving CRF in youth.PMID:37582636 | DOI:10.1136/bjsports-2022-106617

Prediction of postoperative complications after oesophagectomy using machine-learning methods
CONCLUSION: The neural network scored the highest accuracies compared with all of the other models for the prediction of postoperative complications after oesophagectomy.PMID:37343072 | DOI:10.1093/bjs/znad181

Treatment of anastomotic leak after oesophagectomy for oesophageal cancer: large, collaborative, observational TENTACLE cohort study
CONCLUSION: Less extensive primary treatment of anastomotic leak was associated with less morbidity. A less extensive primary treatment approach may potentially be considered for anastomotic leak. Future studies are needed to confirm current findings and guide optimal treatment of anastomotic leak after oesophagectomy.PMID:37196149 | DOI:10.1093/bjs/znad123

Time to level up treatment for less survivable cancers
Br J Hosp Med (Lond). 2023 Apr 2;84(4):1-4. doi: 10.12968/hmed.2023.0073. Epub 2023 Apr 17.ABSTRACTDramatic regional variations in outcomes for patients with less survivable cancer (lung, pancreatic, brain, oesophageal and gastric) have been highlighted in a report published by MSD. This editorial examines this report and considers the implications for UK cancer strategy.PMID:37127412 | DOI:10.12968/hmed.2023.0073
