Advances in delivery methods of < em > Arthrospira platensis < /em > (spirulina) for enhanced therapeutic outcomes
Bioengineered. 2022 Jun;13(6):14681-14718. doi: 10.1080/21655979.2022.2100863.ABSTRACTArthrospira platensis (A. platensis) aqueous extract has massive amounts of natural products that can be used as future drugs, such as C-phycocyanin, allophycocyanin, etc. This extract was chosen because of its high adaptability, which reflects its resolute genetic composition. The proactive roles of cyanobacteria, particularly in the medical field, have been discussed in this review, including the history, previous food and drug administration (FDA) reports, health benefits and the various dose-dependent therapeutic functions that A. pla...

A biotin-modified and H < sub > 2 < /sub > O < sub > 2 < /sub > -activatable theranostic nanoplatform for enhanced photothermal and chemical combination cancer therapy
In this study, a biotin-modified and activatable nanotheranostic system is developed. This system (BPSP/DOX-CyBA) composed of H2O2-sensitive thioketal (TK) linker, hydrophilic biotin-decorated polyethylene glycol (PEG) segment, hydrophobic polycaprolactone (PCL) segment, could self-assemble into (99±1.3) nm nanoparticles and co-deliver H2O2-triggered photosensitizer CyBA and cytotoxic drugs DOX to tumor site. In vitro, DOX and CyBA could release rapidly from nanoparticles, CyBA accumulation in the mitochondria causes mitochondrial damage, leading to mitochondrial dysfunctions, while rising the level of ROS in B16F10 cells,...

Effective Anticancer Therapy by Combination of Nanoparticles Encapsulating Chemotherapeutic Agents and Weak Electric Current
In this study, we applied WEC to tumors and investigated the EPR effect with polyethylene glycol (PEG)-modified doxorubicin (DOX) encapsulated nanoparticles (DOX-NP) administered via intravenous injection into melanoma-bearing mice. The application of WEC resulted in a 2.3-fold higher intratumor accumulation of nanoparticles. WEC decreased the amount of connexin 43 in tumors while increasing its phosphorylation; therefore, the enhancing of intratumor delivery of DOX-NP is likely due to the opening of gap junctions. Furthermore, WEC combined with DOX-NP induced a significant suppression of tumor growth, which was stronger t...
