Radiation exposure by medical X-ray applications
Conclusion: The risk of bias due to a large number of reference sources must be reduced in studies leading to realistic estimates of collective radiation doses. The risk of CT-induced radiation exposure for children should be investigated by further studies with a follow-up of at least ten years.PMID:35465642 | PMC:PMC9006309 | DOI:10.3205/000308

Teen Volunteers Make a Difference at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center
Red Cross VolunTeens at WRNMMC As the leaves turn and school is in full swing, we’d like to take the time to reflect on the contributions of our youth volunteers. We were lucky enough to have more than 40 high school students who volunteered with the Red Cross at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The VolunTeens spent 6 weeks of their summer vacation sharing their time and talents with more than 20 departments throughout the hospital. So what exactly did these VolunTeens do during their time here? I think it’s best to let these amazing students speak for themselves… I volunteered at the 3D Med...

UMass ‘Sidekicks’ Program Matches Medical Students With Sick Children
WORCESTER (CBS) – A student program at UMass Medical School is helping take the fear out of medical treatments for some children. Hospitals are frightening to any child, but for children with life-threatening illnesses, who get poked and prodded, sometimes for years, the school offers something like a big brother program that makes going through treatment just a little bit easier. Dr. Naheed Usmani, a pediatric oncologist, developed the program called “Sidekicks” that matches medical students with very sick children undergoing treatment at UMass Medical Center in Worcester. “The medical students find it very me...

Two medical pioneers aim to trial a cancer-killing virus. I aim to help out | Alexander Masters
A pair of researchers in Sweden may have a revolutionary cancer treatment on their hands. But a separate revolution will be needed to get it to marketJust north of Stockholm, among the creaking Swedish ice-forests, three revolutions for 2013 are taking place.Revolution One: Two researchers at the University of Uppsala have engineered a virus that will attack cancer. Cheap, precise, with only mild, flu-like side-effects, this plucky little microbe sounds too good to be true. Yet in peer-reviewed articles in top journals, Professor Magnus Essand and Dr Justyna Leja have repeatedly showed that Ad5[CgA-E1A-miR122]PTD views hea...

Pd2-2 * a tough road to get jcog1111 ready to start under the advanced medical service system(senshin iryou b)
Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is a malignancy of Th2/Treg cells associated with HTLV-1, and its prognosis is still very poor. ATL is endemic in Japan, but the number of newly-diagnosed patients is limited to approximately 1200/year, while it is much rare in the rest of the world. ATL had been paid little interest to develop novel agents by pharmaceutical industries, mainly due to its rarity. The standard of care in Japan for indolent ATL (iATL) is watch and wait strategy until transformation to aggressive ATL, while early intervention by interferon-alpha and zidovudine (IFN/AZT) is reported to be a standard of care ...

Hemorrhagic cystitis in children treated with alkylating agent cyclophosphamide: The experience of a medical center in Taiwan
Conclusion Alteration serum uric acid level and BMT could be indicators for severe hemorrhagic cystitis. The elevated levels of urinary nitrite/nitrate and 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α may indicate the essential roles played by nitric oxide syntheses and reactive oxidative stress in cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis. These findings may help clinicians formulate a better strategy for treating cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis.

The predictive value of early molecular response in chronic myeloid leukaemia patients treated with imatinib in a single real-world medical centre in a developing country.
CONCLUSION: Our data showed that imatinib is a reasonable first-line therapy. However, vigilant monitoring of patients who have a BCR-ABL level > 10% at 6 months of treatment should be implemented so that prompt action can be taken to provide the best outcome for these patients. Medical performance and the 'inaccessible experience of illness: an exploratory study
We report a survey of audience members' responses (147 questionnaires collected at seven performances) and 10 in-depth interviews (five former patients and two family members, three medical practitioners) to bloodlines, a medical performance exploring the experience of haematopoietic stem-cell transplant as treatment for acute leukaemia. Performances took place in 2014 and 2015. The article argues that performances that are created through interdisciplinary collaboration can convey otherwise ‘inaccessible’ illness experiences in ways that audience members with personal experience recognise as familiar, and find...

The impact of medical insurance coverage and molecular monitoring frequency on outcomes in chronic myeloid leukemia: real-world evidence in China.
CONCLUSIONS: The study findings suggest that CML patients benefit from insurance coverage of imatinib and higher frequency (≥3) of regularly scheduled molecular monitoring PCR in China. PMID: 27937141 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Societal implications of medical insurance coverage for imatinib as first-line treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia in China: a cost effectiveness analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: The insurance coverage of imatinib is very cost-effective in China, according to the local cost and clinical data in Jiangsu province. More importantly, the insurance coverage of imatinib and nilotinib have changed the treatment patterns of CML patients thus dramatically increasing life expectancy and quality of life (QoL) saving on productivity losses for both CML patients and their care givers. Framework of Computer Aided Diagnosis Systems for Cancer Classification Based on Medical Images
AbstractEarly detection of cancer can increase patients ’ survivability and treatment options. Medical images such as Mammogram, Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and microscopic images are the common method for cancer diagnosis. Recently, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been used to help physicians in cancer diagnosis so that the dia gnosis accuracy can be improved. CAD can help in decreasing missed cancer lesions due to physician fatigue, reducing the burden of workload and data overloading, and decreasing variability of inter- and intra-readers of images. In this research, a framework of CAD systems ...

Financial Estimation of the Uncertainty in Medicine Using Present Value of Medical Fees and a Mortality Risk Prediction Model: a Retrospective Cohort Study
This study aimed to develop a method to enable the financial estimation of each patient ’s uncertainty without focusing on healthcare technology. We define financial uncertainty (FU) as the difference between an actual amount of claim (AC) and the discounted present value of the AC (DAC). DAC can be calculated based on a discounted present value calculated using a cash flow, a period of investment, and a discount rate. The present study considered these three items as AC, the length of hospital stay, and the predicted mortality rate. The mortality prediction model was built using typical data items in standard level elec...
