A Cancer Education-Plus-Navigation Intervention Implemented Within a Federally Qualified Health Center and Community-Based Settings
AbstractDespite the availability of effective cancer screening tests, Latinos are screened at lower rates than non-Hispanic Whites. We implemented and evaluated the effectiveness of an evidence-based community health worker (CHW) cancer education-plus-navigation intervention designed to increase cancer screening, knowledge of screening guidelines, and the benefit of early detection. The project included a community and clinic component and served a primarily Latino population. In collaboration with a federally qualified health center (FQHC) and three community-based organizations, bilingual/bicultural CHWs recruited men an...

The Impact of Patient Education Level on Split-Dose Colonoscopy Bowel Preparation for CRC Prevention
DiscussionPatient education level significantly affected the success of BP. Split BP can be more complex to comprehend, and instructions should consider patient education level. Specific intervention programs should be implemented to advise patients with less education that poor preparation may result in missed advanced neoplasias and subsequent procedures.

Effects of Psycho-education Interventions on Colorectal Cancer Patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis
AbstractColorectal cancer (CRC) patients not only undergo physical symptoms but also psychological suffering. Psycho-education interventions have been implemented widely to improve their psychological well-being. However, the effectiveness of psycho-education is unclear. Therefore, this research evaluates the effectiveness of psycho-education interventions on CRC patient outcomes and identifies effective intervention characteristics. The researchers searched the following databases: PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Cochrane, Medline, Web of Science, CINAHL, ProQuest, Wan Fang Data, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chine...

Results from an Evaluation of the Georgia Colorectal Cancer Control Program’s Community Education and Outreach Events, 2013
This study evaluated 23 outreach events, conducted as part of the Georgia Colorectal Cancer Control Program. Of the estimated 1778 individuals who attended these events, those ages 50–75 were eligible to participate in a telephone survey 3 months after attending an event. Surveys measured colorectal cancer (CRC) risk status, CRC screening history at the time of the event, seeking or obtaining CRC screening at 3-month follow-up, and participants’ knowledge of their CRC screening status. Of the 335 individuals contacted for this evaluation, 185 completed the survey. Eighty participants (43.2 %) were at elevated risk fo...

The Role of Patient Navigation on Colorectal Cancer Screening Completion and Education: a Review of the Literature
AbstractAlthough the general assumption is that patient navigation helps patients adhere to CRC screening recommendations, concrete evidence for its effectiveness is still currently under investigation. The present literature review was conducted to explore effectiveness of patient navigation and education on colorectal cancer (CRC) screening completion in medically underserved populations. Data collection included PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane reviews searches. Study inclusion criteria included randomized controlled trials and prospective investigations that included an intervention and control group. Case series, ...

Engaging the Community on Colorectal Cancer Screening Education: Focus Group Discussions Among African Americans
The objectives of this study were to obtain feedback from African Americans on CRC educational materials being developed for a subsequent behavioral clinical trial and explore participants ’ knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about CRC and CRC screening. Seven focus groups were conducted between February and November 2020. Participants were African Americans recruited through community contacts. Four focus groups were held in-person and three were conducted virtually due to Covid-19 restrictions. The Challenge of Education in Colorectal Cancer Surgery: A Comparison of Early Oncological Results, Morbidity, and Mortality Between Residents and Attending Surgeons Performing an Open Right Colectomy
Conclusions: Surgical oncology training of residents by expert surgeons cannot put patient’s safety at risk. Our study showed that oncological accuracy and the 30-day complication rate were equivalent to the standard of care in both groups. Duration of the procedure was not affected by the presence of a trainee.

Patients’ Perceptions of Colorectal Cancer Screening Tests and Preparatory Education in Federally Qualified Health Centers
This study explored federally qualified health center (FQHC) patients’ perceptions about colorectal cancer screening (CRCS) tests, including immunochemical fecal occult blood tests (iFOBT), as well as preferences for receiving in-clinic education about CRCS. Eight mixed gender focus groups were conducted with 53 patients. Findings centered on three thematic factors: (1) motivators and impediments to CRCS, (2) test-specific preferences and receptivity to iFOBTs, and (3) preferences for entertaining and engaging plain language materials. Results informed the development of educational priming materials to increase CRCS using iFOBT in FQHCs.

A Comprehensive Electronic Health Record Based Patient Navigation Module Including Technology Driven Colorectal Cancer Outreach and Education
AbstractThe purpose of this concept paper is to propose an innovative multifaceted patient navigation module embedded in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) to address barriers to efficient and effective colorectal cancer (CRC) care. The EHR-based CRC patient navigation module will include several patient navigation features: (1) CRC screening registry; (2) patient navigation data, including CRC screening data, outcomes of patient navigation including navigation status (CRC screening referrals, fecal occult blood test (FOBT) completed, colonoscopy scheduled and completed, cancelations, reschedules, and no-shows); (3) CRC co...
