Health equity in action: using community-engaged research to update an intervention promoting a healthy home food environment to Black/African American families
CONCLUSION: The Delphi Technique shows promise as a method for conducting community-engaged research that promotes engagement and identifies key information needed to adapt and implement an existing intervention in a community setting.PMID:37736870 | DOI:10.1007/s10552-023-01753-4

Role of Mediterranean diet in the development and recurrence of meningiomas: a narrative review
This study aims to provide an overview about the relationship between meningiomas and food assumption in the Mediterranean diet and whether it can be useful in meningioma prevention or it, somehow, can prevent their recurrence. The authors performed a wide literature search in PubMed and Scopus databases investigating the presence of a correlation between Mediterranean diet and meningiomas. The following MeSH and free text terms were used: “Meningiomas” AND “Diet” and “Brain tumors” AND “diet.” Databases’ search yielded a total of 749 articles. After duplicate removal, an abstract screening according to t...

Cancer Prevention and Early Detection: A Changing Field With an Unchanging Goal
Clin J Oncol Nurs. 2023 Sep 15;27(5):457-458. doi: 10.1188/23.CJON.457-458.ABSTRACTModifiable risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol use, obesity, sun exposure, and infections account for 40%-50% of all new cancer diagnoses and all cancer deaths in the United States (American Cancer Society [ACS], 2023).PMID:37729455 | DOI:10.1188/23.CJON.457-458

Acetylation in pathogenesis: Revealing emerging mechanisms and therapeutic prospects
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Sep 18;167:115519. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115519. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProtein acetylation modifications play a central and pivotal role in a myriad of biological processes, spanning cellular metabolism, proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and beyond, by effectively reshaping protein structure and function. The metabolic state of cells is intricately connected to epigenetic modifications, which in turn influence chromatin status and gene expression patterns. Notably, pathological alterations in protein acetylation modifications are frequently observed in diseases such as metabo...

Reduced risk of de novo Barrett esophagus after bariatric surgery: a national database study
CONCLUSION: Patients who underwent bariatric surgery (RYGB or SG) had a lower risk of being diagnosed with BE compared with screening colonoscopy controls who did not receive bariatric surgery. This effect appears to be largely mediated by reduction in weight and BMI.PMID:37722939 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.08.009

Dietary fat and lipid metabolism in the tumor microenvironment
Biochim Biophys Acta Rev Cancer. 2023 Sep 16:188984. doi: 10.1016/j.bbcan.2023.188984. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMetabolic reprogramming has been considered a core hallmark of cancer, in which excessive accumulation of lipids promote cancer initiation, progression and metastasis. Lipid metabolism is often considered as the digestion and absorption process of dietary fat, and the ways in which cancer cells utilize lipids are often influenced by the complex interactions within the tumor microenvironment. Among multiple cancer risk factors, obesity has a positive association with multiple cancer types, while diets like ca...

Impact on quality of life with affirmative feedback on weight loss after gastrectomy
This study investigated the feasibility of improving post-gastrectomy satisfaction/quality of life (QoL) of gastric cancer survivors by readjusting their expectations through patient interviews. Weight loss after gastric cancer surgery is common, and a change in the departmental policy helped in providing cancer survivors with an alternative interpretation of lost weight. Under the new policy, a group of patients who were preoperatively overweight or obese were provided with affirmative feedback, despite their postoperative weight loss. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QoL Questionnaire-C30 an...
