Viruses, Vol. 12, Pages 1325: Target-Centered Drug Repurposing Predictions of Human Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) and Transmembrane Protease Serine Subtype 2 (TMPRSS2) Interacting Approved Drugs for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Treatment through a Drug-Target Interaction Deep Learning Model
In this study, we used MT-DTI to predict FDA approved drugs that may have strong affinities for the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor and the transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2) which are essential for viral entry to the host cell. Of the 460 drugs with Kd of less than 100 nM for the ACE2 receptor, 17 drugs overlapped with drugs that inhibit the interaction of ACE2 and SARS-CoV-2 spike reported in the NCATS OpenData portal. Among them, enalaprilat, an ACE inhibitor, showed a Kd value of 1.5 nM against the ACE2. Furthermore, three of the top 30 drugs with strong affinity prediction for the TMPRSS2 are an...

What Will The COVID-19 Vaccine Feel Like?
(CNN) — As the United States inches closer to authorizing a COVID-19 vaccine, many people may now let themselves start wondering what it will feel like to get it. Is it going to be like the flu vaccine? Will it be more painful? And what about side-effects? The two front-runners for getting an emergency use authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration — Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna — use new mRNA technology. No U.S.-licensed vaccine has ever used it, although researchers have been studying it for decades against infections like flu, rabies and Zika, and even for some types of cancer. The way these...

Bad news for Paxlovid? Coronavirus can find multiple ways to evade COVID-19 drug
Prescriptions for Pfizer’s blockbuster drug Paxlovid have skyrocketed in recent weeks. That’s good news for many COVID-19 patients, as the pill has been proven to reduce severe disease from SARS-CoV-2 infections. But a bevy of new lab studies shows the coronavirus can mutate in ways that make it less susceptible to the drug, by far the most widely used of the two oral antiviral drugs authorized to treat COVID-19 in the United States. Researchers have found some of those mutations in variants already circulating in infected people, raising fresh concerns that physicians could soon lose one of their best therapies for fi...

A Review of Extracorporeal Blood Purification Techniques for the Treatment of Critically Ill Coronavirus Disease 2019 Patients
In late 2019, a novel betacoronavirus, later termed severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), was discovered in patients with an unknown respiratory illness in Wuhan, China. SARS-CoV-2 and the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), spread rapidly and resulted in the World Health Organization declaring a pandemic in March 2020. In a minority of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2, severe illness develops characterized by a dysregulated immune response, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and multisystem organ failure. Despite the development of antiviral and multiple...
