Does the extent of neck surgery based on preoperative calcitonin level influence survival in medullary thyroid carcinoma: a retrospective tertiary centre experience
CONCLUSION: There was no statistically significant difference in outcomes between high and low calcitonin groups. A selective approach to performing LND in MTC patients based on clinical and imaging findings suggesting disease presence in the lateral neck should be explored further.PMID:38661438 | DOI:10.1308/rcsann.2024.0033 (Source: Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England)

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed by a surgical care practitioner: a review of outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: There is a paucity of published data on surgical outcomes of procedures performed by SCPs. With a structured, supervised approach, SCPs could be trained to take on more complex procedures and further strengthen the surgical workforce. This study demonstrates that elective LC can be safely performed by an appropriately trained and supervised SCP.PMID:38660827 | DOI:10.1308/rcsann.2023.0058 (Source: Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England)

Ileorectal anastomosis in ulcerative colitis: what do surgeons and patients need to know? A systematic literature review
CONCLUSIONS: For some patients, IRA can offer restorative surgery in the short or long term, with acceptable cancer risk, failure rate and postoperative complications, while avoiding the higher risks associated with IPAA.PMID:38660816 | DOI:10.1308/rcsann.2024.0012 (Source: Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England)

Upper gastrointestinal training in the UK and Ireland: a Roux Group Study
CONCLUSIONS: Current CCT requirements are largely consistent with the opinions of the UGI community. Areas for improvement include flexibility in geographical working and increasing national provisions for high-quality endoscopy training.PMID:38634225 | DOI:10.1308/rcsann.2023.0104 (Source: Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England)

Introducing a new proforma for the safe use of intraoperative tourniquets in orthopaedic surgery
CONCLUSIONS: Despite tourniquet usage being part of the UK Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery curriculum, this study is the first to highlight a lack of compliance with 'gold standard' guidelines and the need for increased training for staff to ensure patients are exposed to the safest possible environment. Although electronic proformas can aid recording of information, the limitation to change is cultural tradition and anecdotal experience.PMID:38578023 | DOI:10.1308/rcsann.2023.0072 (Source: Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England)

Is pelvic ultrasound useful in the clinical assessment and management of women with right iliac fossa pain? A single-centre retrospective study
CONCLUSIONS: In patients who underwent operative management, a negative finding or finding not requiring surgical management was associated with no preoperative imaging. This supports the use of ultrasound scans as an adjunct in a multimodal approach to the assessment of women presenting with RIF pain.PMID:38578035 | DOI:10.1308/rcsann.2023.0098 (Source: Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England)
