Forum focus - Taking part counts.
Abstract INCREASED PARTICIPATION of members is vital to the success of the Royal College of Nursing, which is why congress is such a pivotal event in the organisation's calendar. Two major changes at this month's congress aim to highlight the importance of member participation: the annual general meeting will be held and the forum steering committee elections launched. Emphasis on the problems of ageing detracts from the joy.
Abstract LAST YEAR saw the care of older people dominate political discussion. From publication of the inquiry report into the Stafford Hospital scandal in February to the G8 dementia summit in December, the challenge of caring for older patients has hardly been out of the news. But the Royal College of Nursing's new professional lead for the care of older people, Dawne Garrett (pictured), does not want to talk about any of that. Promoting health: making every contact count.
This article describes a new training programme devised and run by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) to assist staff to make every patient contact count. The aim of the training programme is to help nurses become more effective when offering opportunistic health promotion advice as part of their routine work, and avoid generating resistance to change. Evaluation of leadership practices: how to develop a vision
Leadership competencies and more specifically a strategic vision are essential to managing increasingly complex healthcare organisations and change. However, Switzerland, like many other countries, has identified a lack of leadership skills among nurse leaders. Therefore the Royal College of Nursing’s (RCN) Clinical Leadership Programme has been adapted, implemented and evaluated in the Swiss nursing context. The aim of this qualitative study was to evaluate the Leadership Programme’s support for vision development. In-depth interviews with six nurse leaders, who were purposefully selected according to the quan...

Quality of Life and Care in the Nursing Home
A central component of the international nursing home development agenda is to deliver compassionate care that is evidence informed and directed at optimizing the resident's quality of life (QoL) including end of life experiences. Few would challenge this focus on positive resident centered outcomes, and it is easy to proceed without probing deeper into the complexity of what this really means conceptually, philosophically, and practically. The latest Royal College of Nursing [United Kingdom (UK)] survey, completed in 2012, explored the quality of nursing home care within England and identified 10 persistent challenges to ...

The qualitative findings from an online survey investigating nurses' perceptions of spirituality and spiritual care
ConclusionGenerally, nurses had a broad, inclusive understanding of spirituality considering this to be ‘universal’. There was some uncertainty and fear surrounding the boundaries between personal belief and professional practice. Respondents advocated formal integration of spirituality within programmes of nurse education. Relevance to clinical nursingThe concept of spirituality and the provision of spiritual care are now recognised as fundamental aspects of the nurse's role. There is a need for greater clarity between personal and professional boundaries to enable nurses to feel more confident and competent in delive...

Exciting times ahead for EBN
It's an exciting time here at EBN. For the second year we are sponsoring the Marjorie Simpson Award at the Royal College of Nursing's International Nursing Research Society Conference. Marjorie Simpson (1924–1992) was one of the founder members of the research discussion group for nurses in the UK that eventually became the Royal College of Nursing's Research Advisory Group. Marjorie endeavoured to foster research-mindedness among nurses and it is a fitting tribute to her commitment to research within nursing that this award for new researchers is named in her honour. Continuing Marjorie's desire to ensure nursing ca...
