Push for free hospital parking continues
UNISON is continuing to push for the reinstatement of free parking for all NHS staff at hospitals at least during COVID-19 – and for free parking for staff permanently – as it becomes clear that some hospitals are starting to charge staff yet again. Parking was made free for all staff in the early part of the pandemic and remains free in Scotland and Northern Ireland. In Wales, parking has been free for staff since before the pandemic. UNISON believes that parking should be free for all staff on a permanent basis. This initiative has helped keep staff and patients safe, reducing infection risks by staff travelling on...

Government must grant NHS staff a wage rise by Christmas, say health unions
Health unions representing more than 1.3m workers across the UK have written to the Prime Minister calling for a pay rise for all NHS staff before Christmas. The letter to Boris Johnson from all 14 health unions warns the second virus wave is already placing hospitals under immense strain. It says staff are “stressed, burned out and fearful” and that asking them to carry on regardless is “increasingly unrealistic”. The letter adds: “Once more NHS staff will be relied upon to protect and care for us all. But health workers are exhausted, with many still recovering from the first virus peak.” NHS workers are not ...

The 14 unions – representing more than 1.3 million nurses, cleaners, physiotherapists, healthcare assistants, dieticians, radiographers, porters, midwives, paramedics and other NHS employees – have written both to the Chancellor and the Prime Minister calling for pay talks to start soon so staff get a wage boost before the end of the year. Greater clarity needed from PM on plans to scrap immigration health surcharge
Four health and care organisations – including UNISON – have today (Wednesday) written to the Prime Minister seeking confirmation that all international health and care staff, and their spouses and dependants, will no longer need to pay the immigration health surcharge (IHS). The charge, which is due to rise from £400 to £624 a year in October, is currently payable by all migrant workers from non-EU countries, whether they access NHS services or not, both for themselves and for every dependant they have. Last month, the UK government committed to scrapping the charge for heath and care workers in the NHS, but the an...

New agreement to ensure NHS staff in England are paid properly for every working hour
Health workers across England should now be paid properly for every hour they’re at work during the pandemic, following an agreement reached between health unions and NHS employers today (Friday). Since March staff have been working flat out, treating and caring for patients, and keeping the NHS running under immense pressure – but often not getting paid for all the hours they put in, says UNISON. Some NHS trusts have made sure staff are paid for every hour of overtime worked, but this hasn’t been the case everywhere. That’s why 15 unions representing staff working in English NHS trusts – including UNISON, the Ro...

Health unions publish blueprint for the safe opening up of the NHS
Fast, comprehensive and accessible testing, and the ongoing, ample supply of protective kit are among measures that must be in place for the NHS to be opened up safely as the UK begins to ease the lockdown, say health unions today (Friday). The 16 unions – including UNISON, the Royal College of Nursing, the Royal College of Midwives, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, Unite and GMB – have drawn up a nine-point blueprint, which also calls for staff to be paid properly for every hour worked. The unions want to ensure that – as out-patient clinics and operations resume – the NHS continues to operate a safety-firs...

Country falls silent to remember all workers who ’ve died during pandemic
Commenting on today’s silence to remember and give thanks to all the workers who’ve died during the pandemic, UNISON general secretary Dave Prentis said: “It was incredibly moving to see the entire nation fall silent and pay its respects to all the health, care, council and transport workers who’ve tragically lost their lives to the virus. “The sight of government offices, workplaces and homes across the UK pausing for a moment of quiet reflection brought home the overwhelming sense of gratitude we all feel. “While most of us were safe at home, these workers were putting themselves in harm’s way, saving liv...
