Influx of adult ADHD referrals in outpatient
Since starting my private practice a few months ago, it seems like over half of new patients are coming with complaints of ADHD symptoms. It's usually people who've never had a diagnosis of it and want treatment. Occasionally it's people on reasonable current regiments, but there have also been some heroic doses of adderall prescribed as well by previous psychiatrists/pcps. Have you all noticed an uptick in these referrals? This wasn't an issue for me in my residency or my previous ACT job... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

1 month from Match and regretting my specialty. What do I do...?
M4 here, applied Ortho and did 4 away rotations and probably will match if I rank. However I got burnt out after 1-2 aways and hated pretty much everything after that. I regret applying Ortho. What do I do? If I start Ortho residency and 2 months in already want to switch, will my PD even support this switch so early? I applied and interviewed at 5 TYs, do I rank them higher? I know I'd be so much happier in ophthalmology or DR, I should have applied to one of those. I would just do a TY... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

DMU vs TCOM
Hello! I have been lucky enough to be accepted into both TCOM and DMU. I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts between these two schools? As a Texas resident, I believe TCOM is less expensive by far, but also has more research opportunities and I have family close by. On the other hand, I believe DMU has higher pass rates on step exams as well as may be slightly better as a founding school for residency programs. I am most interested in pathology and anesthesiology in case that makes any... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Carilion Clinic: Virginia Tech Psychiatry Residency Program
Hello all, I am an IMG with GC, and I am interested in ranking Carilion Clinic Virginia Tech Psychiatry Program. I live in Miami, FL. I have been to Roanoke/Blacksburg region as my fiance lives/ is from there. Very different from Miami, but not necessarily a bad different. Could any1 give their opinion/views on the Psychiatry Residency at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke VA? I don't see many experiences of this program on the forum. The PD is now a male, not female like a previous post from 2017... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Very small private practice vs locums to maintain clinical experience?
I’m >5 years out of psych residency and extremely burned out, made a job change last year in hopes of improvement though have ended up even more crispy. I’m planning to discuss going part time with my current supervisor but I anticipate the answer will be no so I am working on my contingency plan. I’d like to take a significant break before jumping back in, and want to maintain some clinical experience while I’m sorting things out. I think it’s feasible to start a private practice, with goal... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Does going to a "workhorse" residency program notably benefit your speed in private practice (Columbia vs NYU)
As the title suggests, I am almost 100% sure I want to do private practice. I was told that the reading speed difference between private practice and academics is only increasing and in order to maximize income and have the best shot at making partner it helps to be a fast reader. I am currently deciding whether to rank NYU vs Columbia #1 in order to meet this goal. From what I gathered NYU has more academic and research prestige in the field of radiology but Columbia residents absolutely... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

I did one of my externships at a VA hospital and absolutely loved it! If you work at a VA hospital currently as an optometrist what are your pros and cons?? I have a few job offers and am a little overwhelmed so any advice would be appreciated (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Peds vs Ortho
I am a 3rd year dental student that cannot decide if I want to apply to Pediatric Dentistry or Orthodontics residency programs. Is it possible to apply to programs in both specialties and let fate do its thing? Is this frowned upon or straight-up not allowed? Help! Also, if anyone has some. words of advice/encouragement, I am all ears! TIA (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Obtaining disability insurance with a chronic health condition
Hello, Currently in medical school. I've been diagnosed with a chronic health condition when I was in my teens. Obviously, I did not have the foresight to have imagined this would have happened and so I did not get disability insurance that early on... Just to be transparent, I have Crohn's Disease that is difficult to treat. So, most likely, no disability insurance will take me. I could get a rider that excludes CD, but, to be honest, I don't know if this is even worth it. I am under... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How much would my class ranking matter for a residency match?
My school advisor suggested aiming for at least the 40th percentile in class rank if applying for anesthesiology or surgery. The dean's letter will indicate the top 20% and top 40%. Points are assigned as follows: Honor (+4), Pass (+3), Retest (+2, not shown on transcript), and Remediation (+1, shown on transcript). Internal ranking is based on these points. The dean's letter addresses only preclinical class rank. If I don't have good recognition with the class rank, would it be a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Nontrad starting med school in the fall. Is this a reasonable outlook
I'm in my late 30's and I hope to be done with an FM residency by 46. Considering what is knows about FM salaries today and what we can reasonably predict about the specialty in the future, I still have a goal to retire with 7-8 million by the time I am 75. Yes, I plan on working till 75. Can it be done? Not married but maybe it will happen No kids I expect student loan debt to be forgiven with PSLF I'm not materialistic. I see money as freedom. PCOM-PA vs AZCOM
Hi all, I need help deciding between these two schools. I've listed pros and cons and summarized my overall thoughts at the bottom. Any input would be greatly appreciated. AZCOM Pros: Dissection Based Lab. Good looking residency match list. Beautiful place to live, very outdoorsy. Cons: "Lots of exams." No hospital. Far From Home (I live on east coast). Quarter system? Not a con necessarily, just new to me. $498,000 CoA???? PCOM-PA Pros... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
