The power of storytelling in your resume
Compelling storytelling on your resume can help you stand out as a job candidate. However, storytelling and the story of your life (which is the meaning of curriculum vitae) are not the same. With so many resumes flooding the job market, it can be challenging to make yours stand out. That’s where storytelling comes in. Health > Care, Border Runs
November will mark the beginning of the 24th year of this blog.  While my posts are far from frequent, I hope that each one is helping others in some way.  That’s always been my goal.  Along these lines, I’ll offer the answer to a question I was asked by a start-up health IT company yesterday, and will also outline the process for the Costa Rica ==> Nicaragua ==> Costa Rica border run, which is both necessary and relatively easy.   Health > Care “Dr. Reider – why are you interested / willing to help out little company?”Some context – and then my response.  (After – ...

Rediscovering life: a day of heightened awareness
The dryer clanks and clangs, a rhythm I thought I knew by heart. Cars hum past the house—loud, then quieter, until they fade into the distance. I’m alert, but it’s a selective kind of alertness. I sit in the stillness, waiting for the next thought to arrive. Except, it doesn’t. Is this what living in Read more… Rediscovering life: a day of heightened awareness originally appeared in KevinMD.com. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

Aspects of Social Determinants of Health: Acting on SDoH
Previous articles in this series introduced the importance of social determinants of health (SDoH) and explained how it can be captured and classified. In this article, I’ll show how many hospitals, payers, and other institutions are acting on that data. Of course, the staff of a clinic or hospital don’t go around looking for apartments the way they actively look for a long-term care facility. Instead, their case managers partner with community institutions to help patients. But the clinic or hospital is a crucial linchpin in connecting the patient to this help. According to Dr. Victor Lee, vice president of cl...

Digital Health Anxiety: When Wellness Tech Becomes A Stressor
In today’s hyper-connected world, technology promises us a clearer insight into our health and well-being. With a glance at our wrist or a quick tap on our phones, we can get a snapshot of our heart rate, the quality of our sleep, or the number of steps we’ve taken in a day. These tools, designed to empower us, can sometimes have an unintended consequence: they can become sources of anxiety and stress. Lacing up your running shoes, you head out for a morning run. Looking forward to feeling the wind in your hair, the sun on your face, to enjoying the time to connect with nature and yourself. But the real-time...

Aspects of Social Determinants of Health: Collecting Data
This article shows how organizations are collecting it. Andrew Eye, CEO of the healthcare data science company ClosedLoop, estimates that about 15% of physicians collect SDoH-related data from patients and use it to assess their needs. The percentage is much higher in some areas. Data can be spotty, according to Eye, who says for instance that data from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) often lacks racial identifications. He also says that collecting and processing the data is labor-intensive, because it can be hard to persuade patients to talk openly about financial and logistical problems. At the institu...

Amazon In Healthcare: Disruption, Data Nightmares And Digital Health Dreams
A little while ago we explored Amazon’s initial forays into the healthcare sector, a move that positioned the tech behemoth alongside traditional players in the industry. Amazon’s initial focus was evident: disruption. From obtaining drug distribution licenses in over 10 US states, through acquiring the startup PillPack, to the launch of Amazon Pharmacy and Amazon Care, the company’s intent was clear – to reshape the healthcare landscape. All by myself … don ’ t wanna be
Throughout my career, I’ve been interested in how and why people see clinicians about their pain. I’m intrigued by the journey before, during and afterwards. I’m interested in the social factors influencing choices in healthcare. If I’ve been gardening over the weekend and I wake up Monday with a sore back it’s easy to see a physio here in NZ. That visit is likely paid for by our accident compensation system (24/7 no-fault scheme paid for by taxes and levies). And the jolly joy germ in me thinks “Well at least that means people don’t have to see a doctor first” – but...

Pivot from clinical work? Sometimes the answer is yes, and that ’s OK.
“All I know is how to be a doctor.” That’s the story many physicians tell themselves when they feel pulled to pivot from direct patient care. Through working with a coach, therapist, or mentor, doctors see there are always other possible paths forward. Sometimes, it’s what you need to do to take care of yourself, Read more… Pivot from clinical work? Sometimes the answer is yes, and that’s OK. originally appeared in KevinMD.com. The Evolution Of Clinical Documentation: From Paper To AI
Documentation is an essential heartbeat of clinical care. Like an EKG tracing illustrating the rhythm and health of a heart, clinical documentation captures the intricate narrative of a patient’s health journey. However crucial, documenting clinical care is a cumbersome task, contributing significantly to the burnout of healthcare professionals.  As we are witnessing global shortages in the numbers of medical professionals, streamlining and/or automating unpopular documentation tasks seems a very logical next step. It doesn’t really require the qualification of a trained nurse or doctor, so it is a great wa...
