Not all patients are on disability
A recent conversation with my sister inspired me to write this post. She is a physical therapist who often rants about how patients with chronic pain or chronic illness don’t work and are just on disability. I know she’s far from the only health care provider with the same belief. She and her coworkers spend Read more… Not all patients are on disability originally appeared in KevinMD.com. Shared decision-making in health care: promise vs. reality
The American Heart Association (AHA) recently published a statement on the importance of shared decision-making (SDM) between physicians and patients. This concept, though at least 50 years old, has become popular in the last decade or so, with expectations of improving patient care, satisfaction, safety, care efficiency, and cost reduction. Though some preliminary research appears Read more… Shared decision-making in health care: promise vs. reality originally appeared in KevinMD.com. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

Maria (name changed to protect patient privacy) is a brilliant woman with a troubled health history. After a mental health diagnosis cut short her career as a high-level government official, Maria has struggled with diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, depression, and advanced kidney disease, leading to a series of toe amputations and a decade of disability. Healing the healers: The quadruple aim approach to wellness
As a year comes to a close and another opens to new possibilities, many find themselves contemplating their successes and opportunities for improvements. The holidays are very busy, and the new year brings hope to slow down and reset. For many health care providers, though, the prospect of slowing down is an unrealistic dream. Is a full-time job preventing you from fulfilling your potential?
A little over a year ago, unforeseen circumstances led me to walk away from the security of a full-time job and all the benefits that came with it such as employer-based health insurance and retirement contributions. At the time, I had applied for another position without even realizing that I would be leaving my job. Your thoughts about patients are costing you time and energy
Difficult patients. We’ve all encountered them. Maybe we are them. (After all, they say doctors make the worst patients, and there’s probably some truth to that.) But what makes a patient “difficult”? Is it someone with multiple complex medical issues or a condition you haven’t been able to diagnose or don’t fully understand? Is it Read more… Your thoughts about patients are costing you time and energy originally appeared in KevinMD.com. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

What is the correlation between number of doctors in a society & health of population ?
This query is lingering ever since I entered the medical profession. Though, this question might appear absurd , no correct answer is found yet .When we search the literature, the relationship between doctors and health can be 1.linear, 2.non linear, and 3. even inverse . 1 & 2 are ok 3 is forbidden. However, to put it in a nut-shell, healthiness of a society is little to do with Doctor population alone, is well known and I think it needs no proof. The following scattergram gives some idea about the Issue. Where to get answer for this controversial question ? Great times we are in. We have taught the machine...

The Money ’ s in the Wrong Place. How to Fund Primary Care
By MATTHEW HOLT I was invited on the Health Tech Talk Show by Kat McDavitt and Lisa Bari and I kinda ranted (go to 37.16 here) about why we don’t have primary care, and where we should find the money to fix it. I finally got around to writing it up. It’s a rant but a rant with a point! We’re spending way too much money on stuff that is the wrong thing. 30 years ago, I was taught that we were going to have universal health care reform. And then we were going to have capitated at-risk entities. then below that, you have all these tech enabled services, which are going to make all this stuff work an...

Letting go of perfectionism: a New Year ’ s resolution for self-compassion
Last week I drove to my favorite trails in Point Defiance Park. The roads seemed oddly empty and quiet, even for “the time between the years” as I’ve heard it called. Perhaps I hadn’t noticed it before, since in medicine, it’s always been just another week when most people don’t work, but we always had Read more… Letting go of perfectionism: a New Year’s resolution for self-compassion originally appeared in KevinMD.com. Accelerate your career with mentorship
As a lifelong learner who takes pride in self-directed learning, the importance of mentorship has not always been readily obvious to me. A surprising resolution in primary care
I normally don’t make professional resolutions, but this year I am making an important exception. Why would I do such a thing? Like most of my evolution as a doctor, it comes from the wellspring of wisdom, namely listening to my patients. I had a conversation recently with a patient, Kate, a retired school teacher, Read more… A surprising resolution in primary care originally appeared in KevinMD.com. Raj Singh, Accolade
Earlier this month I caught up with Raj Singh, the CEO of Accolade. The “navigation” company is publicly traded and now offering its own telehealth, primary care & second opinions as well as helping patients access both digital health services and brick & mortar health systems. How is Accolade dealing by both offering primary care and helping patients manage through complex care situations? And why isn’t this available to everyone, yet? Raj told me how it works and what the likely future will be, including work with health plans, and how Accolade is on a path to a $1b in revenue in 5 years.–...
