Microbeads Entering Our Water Daily Could Cover 300 Tennis Courts
Scientists are calling for a total ban on microbeads -- the tiny plastic pieces used in soap, toothpaste and face wash for exfoliation -- after an analysis estimated that 8 trillion of the beads wind up in aquatic habitats every day in the U.S. alone. That’s enough to cover more than 300 tennis courts every day, according to a paper published this month in Environmental Science & Technology, a scientific opinion journal. “We’re facing a plastic crisis and don’t even know it,” co-author Stephanie Green, a conservation research fellow at the College of Science at Oregon State University...

My 17-Year Quest For The Correct Medical Diagnosis
How many times can you begin again? That's what I asked myself as I entered the Hospital for Special Surgery, just three weeks after my first lumbar spine epidural steroid injection and SI joint procedure. I was late. I spent two hours stuck in traffic during my drive from New Jersey to New York. So I was frazzled and my thoughts were scattered when I arrived. Yet, that question, can I start over again after another procedure rattled around in my head. My entire adulthood has been a long and winding road, at least medically. At 17, a sparse menstrual cycle, joint pain and spontaneous fever left doctors scratching their he...

Hysterectomy to treat depression – Deborah ’ s story
I have had problems with my periods all my life. My first period lasted 10 days, and I soon got into the routine of 2 weeks of bleeding, and 2 weeks of crying. My Mother took me to the Doctor, and I was on the pill at the age of 14. This helped a lot, but I still had painful and heavy periods, but at least they only lasted 5 days, and the PMT wasn’t as bad. Came off the pill at 19 due to DVT scares, and carried on suffering. Doctors didn’t believe I had heavy periods as I was never anaemic. The first time I had a Doctor agree was when I was getting the coil fitted, and she refused to give me the copper one as i...
