Vanessa Brown CalderOver the last decade and a  half, fertility rates in the U.S. have declined from above‐replacement at the top of the Great Recession, to below replacement rate a few years later. Since then, fertility rates have continued along a downward trajectory.More recently, the total fertility rate —a measure of the expected number of children a woman will have if she survives her reproductive years, and a sum of age‐specific fertility rates—declined torecord lows (1.64) during the pandemic. In 2021, U.S. births ticked up enough to put birth rates inline with their pre ‐pandemic, downward ...

Taxes and Interstate Migration of Seniors
Chris EdwardsAmericans are moving from high ‐tax states to low‐tax states. The smart states know this and are cutting income tax rates, as discussed in the forthcomingFiscal Policy Report Card on America ’s Governors. One group that states want to attract with tax cuts are seniors and retirees. Just this year,10 states cut their taxes on retirement income, which means income from Social Security, defined ‐benefit (DB) plans, and defined contribution (DC) plans, such as 401(k)s. Currently, about three‐quarters of the states fully exempt Social Security benefits from taxes. About a dozen states fully ex...

Weekly Overseas Health IT Links –24th September, 2022.
This article makes the case and explains what will be required to make it happen. We hear a lot about “digital health” these days. As data about our health piles up — thanks to sources like electronic health records, personal fitness apps and gadgets, and home genome test kits — weshould understand a lot more than we used to about what ’s wrong with our health and what to do about it. But having a lot of data is not enough. We have to be aware of what we have, understand what it means, and act on that understanding. While the challenges are in some ways more acute in the United States because of its fragmented sys...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
August 18, 2022 Edition-----The main issue, probably of the year, is the increasing tension across the Taiwan Strait with all sorts of worries about how conflict can be avoided and prosperity maintained at a reasonable level as tensions continue. And hopefully ease. The impact of climate change in Europe is really becoming obvious and worrying. I am not sure just how a realistic response is possible in any reasonable time.In OZ the PM has come back after a week off to have the Chinese Ambassador tell us we are a vassal and to just shut up and behave. Astonishing and serious stuff IMVHO.-----Major Issues.-----https://www.smh...
