Advancing maternal justice on both sides of the Atlantic
Positive pregnancy and birthing experiences go beyond merely having a healthy mother and baby — so, too, does maternal justice, a term that encompasses broad goals. Affordable, timely, high-quality, equitable, and dignified care during and after pregnancy is essential for all birthing people. Maternal justice is a model of culturally sensitive care that aims to dismantle inequities in maternity care and maximize maternal health and well-being. It rests on human rights and requires us to chip away at racism entrenched in health systems. How do race and ethnicity affect pregnancy and birth? Globally, Black, indigenous, and...

Obstetrics and Gynecology Needs Palliative Care
by Nathan Riley " Can you all, please, just leave us alone? "One particular experience with the death of a newborn stands out in my mind. Moments after birth the baby was breathless, and the neonatology team could not intubate. All of the kingdom ’s pediatric surgeons and other specialists rushed to labor and delivery to no avail. The baby was born with a four centimeter gap in his trachea, an irreparable condition. The mother sat there, holding her dying baby as he took his last breaths while physicians, nurses, and residents were busy as usual. Click-clacking away on computers. Adjusting blankets. Asking questions...

EchoNous KOSMOS 3-in-1 Ultrasound, Electronic Stethoscope, and ECG Helps with COVID-19
EchoNous, a developer of novel ultrasounds, has found a way to leverage multiple critical clinical technologies within a single device. The result is KOSMOS, a handheld 3-in-1 device consisting of an ultrasound, electronic stethoscope, and an ECG, all linked via artificial technology. When COVID-19 was hitting NYC earlier this year, EchoNous was able to use KOSMOS to help diagnose COVID patients and to inform on treatment strategies. We had a lovely chat with Dr. Richard Hoppmann, a key member of EchoNous, Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of South Carolina, and the Director of the Ultrasound I...

Maternity services in smaller hospitals: a call to action
Nuffield Trust -In rural and remote areas, the closure of maternity units can mean longer transfer times and poorer support for obstetric emergencies, but the viability of smaller maternity units is often questioned. This working paper discusses the issues affecting the delivery of safe and effective maternity services and serves as a call to action for areas of improvement that are within the control of employers and national organisations.Working paperNuffield Trust - publications (Source: Health Management Specialist Library)

Jada System for Postpartum Hemorrhage: Interview with Rob Binney, CEO of Alydia Health
Alydia Health, a company based in Menlo Park, California, has developed the Jada System, a device designed to stop postpartum hemorrhage. The condition involves heavy bleeding after delivery of a baby. Affected women can experience extended hospital stays, and, unfortunately, can sometimes die. In fact, postpartum hemorrhage is a leading cause of maternal death in the US. Current treatments for the condition are not ideal, and include medications that can be too slow to work, and an inflatable balloon that slows or stops the bleeding, but takes 12-24 hours to work and can be uncomfortable.   These issues inspired th...

This is the first of these for some weeks - first, I was away on leave, then, I was just disorganised. There are too many new research articles and systematic reviews to list, so I suggest you go to McMaster ' sEvidence Alerts and search for your topic of interest.Start on the launch page, where you can see how they identify studies to include.  Then go to Search and enter your term(s) - Advanced Search Options lets you specify things like diagnosis, discipline (e.g. Obstetrics) and population (e.g. Neonates).  Although your search term may mean you don ' t need to specify discipline or population, of co...

An emerging link between the urinary microbiome and urinary incontinence
Most people know that microorganisms live on our skin, and in other places in the body such as the digestive tract. However, traditional thinking and medical teaching was that there was no such microbiome in the urinary tract. Many people may still believe that urine is sterile. Advanced detection methods such as enhanced urine cultures and DNA sequencing have shown that this is not true. These newer technologies have enabled identification of low levels of microorganisms that were not previously detected using conventional methods. This has revolutionized how we think about the urinary tract when it is both healthy and un...

Birthing in the era of COVID
As an obstetrician, I am asked daily, what is my birth going to look like? What happens when I am in labor? Where do I go if I think I am in labor? Before COVID, these were easy questions to answer. I would explain what the usual steps are and then politely refer them to […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more.
