What Will Blood Testing Look Like In The Near Future?
The traditional process of blood draw is familiar to everyone. It typically involves visiting a healthcare facility where a professional, such as a nurse or phlebotomist, draws the blood. Patients then wait for results that are often challenging for non-professionals to interpret.  This analysis aims to explore how this universally recognized procedure has evolved recently and how it is expected to change in the next 5-10 years, especially in the context of digital health. Initially, blood draw was a purely manual process, requiring skilled professionals for both the drawing and the analysis. The procedure and e...

Caring at a cost: workplace violence and my exit from nursing
In 2013, I graduated with a BSN, drawn to nursing by a love for science and a passion for helping others. The promise of good pay, job security, and growth opportunities was a marketing pitch so convincing I never thought to question it. Before my first clinical experience, I vividly recall having to attend a Read more… Caring at a cost: workplace violence and my exit from nursing originally appeared in KevinMD.com. When I thought I was going to die. On the toilet.
I cannot believe I haven’t told this story. In my youth, teens, during the Cold War. Old enough to know about the CW, and how we were all in danger, all the time. Nuclear War, MAD, the whole deal. It was a tense time specifically then, the US and the USSR were getting kinda chippy. I was aware. Visiting relatives in the bustling city of Kermit, Texas. It’s an oil field town. (Kermit was in this blog a decade or more ago for BS involving criminally charging nurses for reporting a doc to the medical board, just search the site for Kermit). Nature called, went to the throne room. Somewhere in this operation it hap...

A heartfelt plea: the power of emotions in health care
I leaned over the bed’s railing, straining to hear the morphine-slurred words spilling out of his chapped lips. “Make them stop laughing,” he said, referring to the cohort of young nurses giggling around the code cart in the hallway. “I’m in here suffering, in pain, and I shouldn’t have to hear laughter. Tell them to Read more… A heartfelt plea: the power of emotions in health care originally appeared in KevinMD.com. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

Martin Luther King
Today is Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, January 15, 2024. It’s sunny and cold outside. The dogs are pining for a walk. At least I think they are; I’m not sure. I’m experimenting with Apple Journal in the hope that I can get motivated to write again. This is a different blogging/journaling experience than what I’ve used in the past. I’m going to try it out and see how it works for me. I also have Jetpack, the WordPress blogging extension, loaded on both my phone and my iPad. It’s a decent environment but I found I was getting too many notifications from it. I didn’t like that. Maybe this will be different...

CHIME23 – What ’ s a Problem, Technology, Opportunity, or Issue Not Enough People are Talking About?
The world of health IT is ever-changing. One moment a problem is unsolvable, the next a new technology has been created and solves the problem. One moment no one is talking about something, the next it is the hottest topic of the year. Or reversely, one moment we’re all talking about one topic, and the next we’ve left that topic in the dust as we all moved on to something new. Sometimes we even get hyper-focused on one topic, forgetting to expand our vision to the many technicalities that are needed to properly support the topic. But just like the other scenarios, that can change on the flip of a coin where all...
