Why a nurse should not go to jail
I recently wrote a letter to the Davidson County, TN judge who will sentence RaDonda Vaught, a former Vanderbilt University Medical Center nurse convicted on two felony counts in the 2017 death of a patient. RaDonda faces up to 12 years in prison for her role in a complex chain of events that led toRead more …Why a nurse should not go to jail originally appeared inKevinMD.com. Health Care Through the Back Door: The Dangers of Nurse Visits
By HANS DUVEFELT In some practices, patients with seemingly simple problems are scheduled to be seen by a nurse or medical assistant. Sometimes they can even just drop off a urine sample in case of a suspected urinary tract infection. This is a dangerous trap. What if the patient rarely gets urinary infections, has back pain and assumes it is a UTI instead of a kidney stone or shingles on their back just where one kidney is located; what if they have lower abdominal pain from an ovarian cyst or an ectopic pregnancy? Another dangerous type of “nurse visit” is when patients focus on one symptom or parameter, thi...

An example of medical-legal consulting
Medical-legal consulting is a great way to use your medical training in a non-clinical field that helps people. Who will heal the physician? [PODCAST]
“Medical errors exist at the far end of a continuum of unexpected events in clinical practice and they are devastating for all involved. The criminalization of true medical errors is a step backwards for patient safety
On December 27, 2017, as the result of a medication error, 75-year-old Charlene Murphey died tragically at Nashville ’s Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Malpractice: an officer of the court

Divided loyalties: A physician testifies against a colleague
Some may think I am a traitor. I testified against one of our colleagues. And his employment was terminated. It feels terrible. A man in his 60s with chest pain. Cardiologist refuses to take to the lab. Obvious STEMI, even with criteria. Yet final diagnosis " NSTEMI " . This happens far too often.
Submitted by Anonymous MD, edits by MeyersA man in his 60s with past medical history of multiple sclerosis and hypertension was brought in by EMS from home for chest pain thatstarted acutely just prior to arrival. He rated the pain at 9/10, describes as pressure, radiates towards the left arm with associated shortness of breath, diaphoresis and had one episode of emesis. He did not have a prior history of CAD or other cardiac disease. His pain improved to 6/10 after EMS gave him 3 sprays of sublingual nitroglycerin and 324 mg of aspirin. Prehospital ECGs:What do you think? Both ECGs are diagnostic of acute LAD OMI...

In defense of medical errors
I gasped at the guilty verdict that halted my indifferent scroll through the newsfeed. If that standard was applied across theRead more …In defense of medical errors originally appeared inKevinMD.com. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

The emotional aspect of surviving a lawsuit or disciplinary action
Malpractice claims and disciplinary actions are unfortunate realities for too many physicians. By the time a doctor is 54 years old, there is almost a 50 percent chance that they will haveRead more …The emotional aspect of surviving a lawsuit or disciplinary action originally appeared inKevinMD.com. “I do not hesitate to share what I endured. I recognize that there is a code of silence that must be broken when one is involved in legal action.
