CSR Director's Seminar: Reforming How Investigator Initiated Research is Funded in Canada
The presentation will provide an overview of how the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is reforming the architecture and peer review processes to transform the way investigator initiated research is funded. This includes implementing two new funding schemes and making significant changes to peer review processes including the use of application focused review, structured peer review, remote review and new scoring processes. CIHR is mid-way through their implementation and will provide an overview of the results of the early pilot studies which are showing improved effectiveness as well as reductions in both app...

Pathogenic pathways in allergy gleaned from monogenic disease
NIH Director's Seminar Series Monogenic diseases can be highly instructive in uncovering basic pathways whose perturbations lead to specific symptoms. Monogenic diseases associated with allergy present an opportunity to define pathways critical for preventing allergic disease. Previous studies of such diseases have understandably focused on the more severe associated phenotypes such as infection, autoimmunity or neoplasms. Our lab wishes to mechanistically understand how these mutations lead to the allergic phenotype, in order to learn globally important lessons in allergy pathogenesis. Additionally, we seek to define ...

How to Learn in "The Learning Healthcare System"
National Library of Medicine Informatics Lecture Series The Institute of Medicine has argued for more than 20 years that we should view every patient interaction as an (uncontrolled) experiment, and learn from its outcome. Dr. Szolovits has been a participant in numerous collaborative projects, trying to apply this method to data about a broad range of patients suffering from conditions such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, autism, depression. In this lecture, he will review some of the methodological challenges he has encountered and the hard-won lessons he has learned. These...

Small Blood Vessels: Big Health Problems - Day 1
The goal of the proposed workshop is to identify common challenges and foster interdisciplinary collaboration and synergy in the broad area of small vessel biology in health and disease, across various organs of the human body. The workshop will achieve this goal by strategically bringing together researchers from different relevant biomedical research areas related to small vessel biology or disease, many of whom have not yet worked together to significant extent. This has created knowledge gaps that the workshop will address through sharing research findings followed by several cross-disciplinary panel discussions, inclu...
