Ultrasonics. 2023 Nov 25;138:107206. doi: 10.1016/j.ultras.2023.107206. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA new reconstruction approach that combines Reverse Time Migration (RTM) and Genetic Algorithms (GAs) is proposed for solving the inverse problem associated with transluminal shear wave elastography. The transurethral identification of the first thermal lesion generated by transrectal High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) for the treatment of prostate cancer, was used to preliminarily test in silico the combined reconstruction method. The RTM method was optimised by comparing reconstruction images from several cross-cor...

Online monitoring of fatigue damage in welded joints using diffuse ultrasound
In this study, a novel method is proposed to monitor the diffuse ultrasonic field affected by ratcheting strain and microcracks formed in welded joints during fatigue degradation. The energy density in the diffuse ultrasonic signal is computed and correlated with different fatigue cycles, allowing for online monitoring of fatigue damage in welded joints. Six butt and cross-welded joints were studied under different fatigue conditions, and digital image correlation (DIC) technology was used for comparison throughout the fatigue tests. The results indicate that the correlation coefficient of the energy density in diffuse ult...

Ultrasonic measurement of temperature distributions in extreme environments: Electrical power plants testing in utility-scale steam generators
Ultrasonics. 2023 Nov 22;138:107205. doi: 10.1016/j.ultras.2023.107205. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThermal heterogeneities within energy conversion and storage, material processing, nuclear processes, aerospace, and military applications are often inaccessible to characterization by insertion sensors. When sensor deployment is possible, conventional pointwise temperature probes quickly degrade when inserted into harsh environments typical of such processes. We developed spatially-resolved ultrasonic thermometry to noninvasively measure the spatial distributions of thermal properties in such applications, even when sizab...

Joint learning of sparse and limited-view guided waves signals for feature reconstruction and imaging
Ultrasonics. 2023 Nov 17;137:107200. doi: 10.1016/j.ultras.2023.107200. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSparse and limited-view ultrasonic guided wave imaging has become a research hotspot in the field. Studies have shown that traditional under-sampling ultrasonic imaging methods either require a significant amount of time to recover the full data or produce poor quality imaging results. To address these issues, this paper proposes an end-to-end ultrasonic guided wave joint learning imaging method for sparse and limited-view transducer arrays, which integrates sparse feature reconstruction and deep learning imaging methods. ...

Response surface methodology and machine learning based tensile strength prediction in ultrasonic assisted coating of poly lactic acid bone plates manufactured using fused deposition modeling
The objective of the present study was to compare the values of tensile strength predicted using RSM and machine learning (ML) models. Based on the obtained experimental values, gradient boosting regression (GBReg), linear regression (LReg) and random forest regression (RFReg) were trained and tested for predicting tensile strength of bone plates. The accuracy and prediction errors corresponding to RSM and ML based models were compared with respect to R2, Mean Squared Error (MSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE). The findings revealed that GBReg exhibited R2, MSE, RMSE and MAE values as 0.9312,...

Acoustic waves in random distributions of double porosity cylinders
Ultrasonics. 2023 Nov 7;137:107197. doi: 10.1016/j.ultras.2023.107197. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEffective quantities - wavenumber, bulk modulus and mass density - are sought for a random distribution of double porosity parallel circular cylinders saturated by the surrounded fluid. For this purpose, a Generalized Self Consistent Method (GSCM) is applied to Linton and Martin's formula for the wavenumber, which accounts for multiple scattering between cylinders. Since Linton and Martin's formula contains the Independent Scattering Approximation (ISA), the simplest case of GSCM applied to ISA is also examined. The analysi...

Exploring of anisotropy of acousto-optic interaction in lead molybdate crystals
Ultrasonics. 2023 Nov 13;137:107203. doi: 10.1016/j.ultras.2023.107203. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe dependence of the elastic and acousto-optic properties of lead molybdate crystals on the direction of the wave vector and the polarization of acoustic and optical waves has been studied. The effective photoelastic constants were determined by the Dixon method for various geometries of the Bragg light diffraction. The dependence of the acousto-optic quality factor on the direction of the wave vector of longitudinal acoustic waves in the symmetry plane has been studied in detail. It is shown that in this case the largest...

Optimizing coupling layer and superstrate thickness in attachable acoustofluidic devices
Ultrasonics. 2023 Nov 13;137:107202. doi: 10.1016/j.ultras.2023.107202. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSuperstrate-based acoustofluidic devices, where the fluidic elements are reversibly coupled to a transducer rather than bonded to it, offer advantages for cost, interchangeability and preventing contamination between samples. A variety of coupling materials can be used to transmit acoustic energies into attachable superstrates, though the dimensions and material composition of the system elements are not typically optimized. This work analyzes these coupling layers for bulk wavefront transmission, including water, ultrasou...
