Augmentation of tumour perfusion by ultrasound and microbubbles: A preclinical study
CONCLUSIONS: The best sononeoperfusion effect was obtained with an MI of 0.3 and an ultrasound exposure time of 450 s. The effect is most likely related to NO and ATP increases. The sononeoperfusion effect might be a novel way to ameliorate tumour hypoperfusion and hypoxia.PMID:38104380 | DOI:10.1016/j.ultras.2023.107219 (Source: Ultrasonics)

Computational model to address lens-based acoustic field aperture in the in vitro ultrasonic cell stimulation
Ultrasonics. 2023 Dec 15;138:107226. doi: 10.1016/j.ultras.2023.107226. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLow-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound Stimulation (LIPUS) is a therapeutic modality used for bone tissue regeneration and healing. Its clinical efficacy is still debated, as the underlying physical phenomena remain poorly understood. The interaction between ultrasonic waves and cells, likely to trigger mechanotransduction inducing bone regeneration, is at the center of scientific concerns on the subject. In order to get new insights into these phenomena, the development of in vitro experiments is a key step but special attention...

The higher order leaky Lamb wave sensitivity of a notch in a fluid-immersed plate
We present an ultrasonic method of detecting cracks in pipelines based on using normally incident transducers in a pitch-catch setup, which can only excite Lamb modes of higher order than the fundamental modes A0 and S0 commonly used in crack detection applications. By excitation and measurements of the Lamb modes S1, S2, and A3, in a steel plate immersed in fluid with and without a notch (to emulate a crack), the performance of the modes towards crack detection is quantified by assessing whether it returns a high leaky component and whether the notch has a large impact on the leaky component. In order to narrow the scope ...

Temperature dependence of acoustic parameters in pure and blended edible oils: Implications for characterization and authentication
Ultrasonics. 2023 Dec 5;138:107216. doi: 10.1016/j.ultras.2023.107216. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis research investigates the temperature-dependent variation of diverse acoustic parameters in samples of edible oils. It further supplements previous studies on the effectiveness of non-destructive ultrasonic inspection in the authentication of edible oils. The oils under examination consist of pure samples of olive, sunflower, and corn oils, as well as variable mixtures ranging from 20 % to 80 % of the more expensive one (olive oil) with the other two, simulating a hypothetical adulteration scenario. The studied acousti...

Guided acoustic waves in thin epitaxial films: Experiment and inverse problem solution for NiTi
Ultrasonics. 2023 Nov 24;138:107211. doi: 10.1016/j.ultras.2023.107211. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite the fundamental and technological importance of the elastic constants, a suitable method for their full characterization in epitaxial films is missing. Here we show that transient grating spectroscopy (TGS) with highly k-vector-selective generation and detection of acoustic waves is capable of determination of all independent elastic coefficients of an epitaxial thin film grown on a single-crystalline substrate. This experimental setup enables detection of various types of guided acoustic waves and evaluation of th...

Wavefield imaging of nonlinear ultrasonic Lamb waves for visualizing fatigue micro-cracks
Ultrasonics. 2023 Dec 2;138:107214. doi: 10.1016/j.ultras.2023.107214. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe traditional nonlinear ultrasonic technique, as typified by the second-harmonic generation and the frequency mixing response, can be employed to identify and characterize the micro-damage. However, the research on micro-damage characterization using nonlinear Lamb wave imaging technique remains an ongoing challenge and is rarely reported. A method called standardized amplitude difference is proposed for nonlinear feature enhancement, and further for fatigue crack imaging based on the wavefield data. Wavefield data contai...

A coupling, stabilizing, and shaping strategy for breast ultrasound computed tomography (USCT) with a ring array transducer
This article proposes a coupling, stabilizing, and shaping strategy for the clinical application of USCT with a ring array transducer. The solid gel coupling agent (SGCA) is applied for coupling, and a set of SGCA moldings is designed to stabilize and shape the breast during scanning, the breast shape and size which vary from person to person are simplified into several models. The preparation time is reduced to less than 1 min by replacing disposable moldings. The results show that the breast after shaping is close to round in the coronal plane, and slopes of the breast skin are limited in the sagittal and transverse plan...

Acoustic emission characteristics of micro-discharges in initial pulsed PEO process on 60% SiC < sub > p < /sub > /Al composite
Ultrasonics. 2023 Dec 1;138:107213. doi: 10.1016/j.ultras.2023.107213. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe initial discharge process of pulsed plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) on the 60% SiCp/2009 aluminum metal matrix composite (Al MMC) in silicate solution was monitored by acoustic emission (AE) technique. Parameters and correlations of AE signals on the Al MMC sample and under water were analyzed, and their generation mechanism was discussed. It was found that the peak amplitudes of AE signals and AE hits during the pulse time quickly increased with the increase of micro-discharge intensity, and the absolute energy of ...
