Leveraging the Multidimensional Poverty Index to estimate < em > Helicobacter pylori < /em > prevalence in districts in Karnataka, India
Trop Doct. 2023 Oct 11:494755231206850. doi: 10.1177/00494755231206850. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) in India is approximately 64%. However, substantial regional variations necessitate high-fidelity, locality-specific studies to characterise its population distribution in India. We conducted a cross-sectional study including 2998 dyspeptic patients at a tertiary care centre in Karnataka and investigated the relationship between Hp prevalence and the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) by district. Helicobacter pylori prevalence in our population was 43.2% with a significant corr...

Acquired methaemoglobinaemia in infancy associated with acute diarrhoea: A case series
We report five infants who, following severe diarrhoea, developed methaemoglobinemia. This is an altered state of haemoglobin presenting with cyanosis and can pose a diagnostic dilemma. It should be suspected in young infants without cyanotic heart disease presenting with severe diarrhoea, sepsis and cyanosis disproportionate to their clinical status. Its outcome depends on prompt treatment, the severity of underlying sepsis and co-morbidity.PMID:37807706 | DOI:10.1177/00494755231205632 (Source: Tropical Doctor)

Distal duodenal web with malrotation: An unusual finding
Trop Doct. 2023 Oct 5:494755231205628. doi: 10.1177/00494755231205628. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe most common site of the congenital duodenal web is the second part. Web distal to the second part of the duodenum is rare. It mimics the windsock deformity. Diagnosis may be missed if accompanying malrotation is present. We hereby report two cases of distal duodenal webs associated with malrotation and challenges in their diagnosis and management.PMID:37796942 | DOI:10.1177/00494755231205628 (Source: Tropical Doctor)

Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRetained needle fragments can occur in intravenous drug user (IVDU), which can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. The aim of present study is to give an overview of our institutional experience and treatment protocol followed for such patients. IVDU with retained fragment of fractured needle were taken from the patient presenting in Emergency, Medicine and CTVS departments with history of IVDU, from January 2019 to December 2020. Six patients were found with retained broken needles. Detailed history, examination a...

Prevalence of vascular thrombosis in patients with liver abscess
Trop Doct. 2023 Sep 29:494755231204920. doi: 10.1177/00494755231204920. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThrombotic complications in liver abscess are less commonly identified in the literature. In this prospective observational study, vascular thrombosis was detected in 21.9% cases. However, there was no significant difference in outcome with or without vascular thrombosis, properly treated.PMID:37774768 | DOI:10.1177/00494755231204920 (Source: Tropical Doctor)
