A Human Rights Perspective on Palliative Care: Unraveling Disparities and Determinants Among Asian American Populations
Conclusion: A human rights framework emphasizing palliative and other end-of-life approaches to care may be inadequate to address unique considerations among diverse Asian American subgroups. Theorists and practitioners should incorporate practices of collectivist orientations and family contexts commonly found among these diverse communities. (Source: Topics in Language Disorders)

Knowledge of Palliative Care and Advance Directives Among Speech–Language Pathology Students
This study utilized a participatory design approach for survey development to study student awareness and knowledge of select palliative care topics. Study results revealed SLP students' high exposure to the construct of quality of life, with notably limited knowledge of and exposure to palliative care and advance directives. Furthermore, SLP students frequently reported being familiar with a concept or term and yet were unable to explain the concept accurately. These data were analyzed and offer critical insights into curriculum design for training SLP students about palliative care. (Source: Topics in Language Disorders)

Training Future Speech–Language Pathologists for Work in End-of-Life and Palliative Care
Speech–language pathologists often lack preparation for palliative care practice and this lack of training can lead to poor outcomes for patients. Lack of training can additionally lead to burnout and compassion fatigue in clinicians. Careful implementation of training is necessary to increase the knowledge base for palliative practice and careful attention must also be paid to the emotional component of end-of-life care. The history and current practice of palliative care education across health care disciplines are examined. Finally, a pilot study evaluating a course module on palliative and end-of-life care for speech...

Alternatives to Traditional Language Sample Measures With Emergent Bilingual Preschoolers
The aim of this article was to evaluate the use of alternatives to traditional language sample analysis (LSA) measures with bilingual preschool-aged children. A database of 184 bilingual preschool children, including children with developmental language disorder (DLD), was used in this study. The goals of the study were to establish the convergent validity between traditional language sample measures and alternative measures of clinician-observed and parent-reported longest utterance, compare groups across traditional and alternative measures, and establish to what extent alternative measures predict language status (typic...

Language Sample Analysis of Writing in Children and Adolescents: Assessment and Intervention Contributions
This article offers a review of analytic writing measures in the LSA literature from perspectives that include developmental change, language ability differences, relation to quality ratings, practical utility, and effects of genre and task. Writing samples from two 12-year-old students, with and without a language disorder, are used to illustrate application of these measures and suggest potential instruction targets. Language Sample Analysis With Bilingual Children: Translating Research to Practice
This article reviews and synthesizes the literature on LSA in order to provide guidance for clinicians seeking to utilize this tool with bilingual children. The focus is on oral narrative language samples, reflecting the currently available literature. The article reviews procedural considerations in eliciting and coding narratives with bilingual children and considers the evidence of effectiveness for different assessment purposes such as the identification of language disorders and the documentation of dual-language growth over time. Research findings are translated to clinical scenarios. Finally, gaps in the literature ...

Minimizing Variability in Language Sampling Analysis: A Practical Way to Calculate Text Length and Time Variability and Measure Reliable Change When Assessing Clients
This article focuses on sample length and time-based variability in the LSA literature and how it has been addressed through a scoping review. We then propose a method for estimating the effect of this common source of variability to allow determination of reliable change in individuals over time. Although some sources of variability are acknowledged in the research literature and clinical evidence-based practice, there has been no consistent method to account for these. The proposed method we present offers a means to address text length and time-based variability and materials and examples to facilitate its implementatio...

Assessing Expository Discourse Abilities Across Elementary, Middle, and High School
This article provides guidance to clinicians and educators on using language sample analysis (LSA) to assess the expository language abilities of students across grades. Focusing on microstructural and macrostructural characteristics and comparing with grade-level standards, clinicians can use LSA to assess a student's production and comprehension of academic language and to guide intervention planning. Example discourse samples are included, along with a brief discussion of how the LSA results for these samples can be used for intervention planning. Using curriculum-based materials, LSA in expository contexts can lead to ...

Using General Language Performance Measures to Assess Grammar Learning
Grammar is an important goal area for children with language impairment. The current article considers the use of General Language Performance Measures (GLPMs) to assess outcomes for this basic goal area and for 3 intermediate grammar goals that contribute to children's developing ability to construct increasingly longer and more complex sentences: production of word combinations, production of sentences with required and optional constituents, and production of complex sentences. These goals are very important because they address a significant deficit area for children with language impairment and enable these children t...
