School-Based Telepractice Assessment (STA): Guidance for Evaluating School-Based Speech–Language Telepractice Service Delivery
This article presents the School-Based Telepractice Assessment (STA; Lundblom et al., 2021), comprising aspirational questions related to compliance with federal legislation; personnel; roles and responsibilities of school-based SLPs; and privacy and security issues. The STA is designed for use by SLPs, school administrators, and contracted providers. The guide comprehensively evaluates the range of school-based telepractice components such as diagnostic and therapeutic services, the use of support personnel consultation, preventative services, integration with the school culture and curricula, and compliance with federal ...

Using Animated Action Scenes to Remotely Assess Sentence Diversity in Toddlers
Although language samples are child-friendly and well-suited for obtaining global measures of language production, structured protocols have the potential to elicit many different exemplars of language structures in a shorter amount of time. We created a structured elicitation protocol, the Sentence Diversity Priming Task (SDPT), to efficiently assess sentence diversity in toddlers via video chat platforms. Sentence diversity is operationalized as the number of different subject–verb combinations in active declarative sentences. The task is presented as an animated picture book, with parents serving as the child's primar...

Entering the Digital Therapy Room: Best Practices for Telepractice Interventions With School-Age Clients
School-based speech–language pathologists (SLPs) have been plunged into telepractice service delivery with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, this temporary shift to provide online instruction is not the same as fully implementing a telepractice service delivery model that is comparable with in-person service delivery. The purpose of this article is to provide the practicing SLP with a framework for delivering effective intervention services to school-age students with language impairments via telepractice. Within this framework, the SLP still must consider the available evidence base for an intervention and impleme...

Online Language Assessment of School-Age Students
The purpose of this tutorial is to guide speech–language pathologists in conducting speech and language evaluations remotely. Practical considerations, such as setting up the testing environment and the importance of conducting a pre-evaluation check, are discussed. Different item types and assessments are discussed with consideration of the technology requirements for different tools. Issues such as testing fidelity when remotely administering assessments that were normed with in-person testing and ways to use standardized tools in nonstandardized ways are addressed. The benefits of remote testing are discussed. (Source...

Preparing Speech–Language Pathology Graduate Students for Effective Telepractice: Recommended Knowledge and Skills
This article outlines a set of telepractice competencies to guide graduate programs and to promote self-evaluation among practicing clinicians. The specified competencies are clustered into three domains: (1) regulatory, reimbursement, and ethics; (2) telecommunications technology; and (3) clinical telepractice. Examples of knowledge and skills specific to each competency are provided. Infusion of the telepractice competencies within the curriculum of three accredited graduate programs is illustrated. Targeting Communication Effectiveness in Adults Who Stutter: A Preliminary Study
The purpose of this study was to examine the benefits of a treatment approach for adults who stutter that focuses on core communication competencies rather than attempt to modify speech fluency. Eleven adults who stutter completed a 12-week treatment program at The Arthur M. Blank Center for Stuttering Education and Research. Pre- and posttreatment measures included (a) self-reported cognitive and affective aspects of stuttering (Overall Assessment of the Speaker's Experience of Stuttering [OASES], Self-Perceived Communication Competence [SPCC], Devereux Adult Resilience Survey [DARS], and Self-Compassion Scale [SCS]) and ...

Understanding the Speaker's Experience of Stuttering Can Improve Stuttering Therapy
This article highlights the value for speech–language pathologists of considering the overall stuttering condition—including speakers' experiences during and around moments of stuttering—in treatment with individuals who stutter. We first highlight a framework for conceptualizing the entirety of the stuttering condition. We then present recent research and clinical perspectives about stuttering to support the claim that speech–language pathologists who account for individual differences in how their clients experience stuttering are better positioned to treat stuttering more effectively. Ultimately, this will yield...

Novel Word Recognition in Childhood Stuttering
Language skills have long been posited to be a factor contributing to developmental stuttering. The current study aimed to evaluate whether novel word recognition, a critical skill for language development, differentiated children who stutter from children who do not stutter. Twenty children who stutter and 18 children who do not stutter, aged 3–8 years, completed a novel word recognition task. Real-time eye gaze was used to evaluate online learning. Retention was measured immediately and after a 1-hr delay. Children who stutter and children who do not stutter exhibited similar patterns of online novel word recognition. ...

Why Stuttering Occurs: The Role of Cognitive Conflict and Control
The purpose of this article is to provide a theoretical account of the experience of stuttering that incorporates previous explanations and recent experimental findings. According to this account, stuttering-like disfluencies emerge during early childhood from excessive detection of cognitive conflict due to subtle limitations in speech and language processes. For a subset of children who begin to stutter, the development of approach-avoidance motivational conflict likely contributes to a chronic reliance on cognitive control processes during speech. Consequently, maladaptive activation of right hemisphere inhibitory corti...
