Early and late Results after Surgical Mitral Valve Repair: A High-Volume Center Experience
CONCLUSION: Mitral valve surgery, both minimally-invasive and via sternotomy, is associated with high repair rates, excellent perioperative outcomes, and long-term survival. Data underscore the effectiveness of surgical repair in managing MR, even in the era of advancing interventional techniques.PMID:38346705 | DOI:10.1055/a-2266-7677 (Source: The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon)

Current Status of Cardiac Xenotransplantation: Report of a Workshop of the German Heart Transplant Centers, Martinsried, March 3, 2023
This report comprises the contents of the presentations and following discussions of a workshop of the German Heart Transplant Centers in Martinsried, Germany on cardiac xenotransplantation. The production and current availability of genetically modified donor pigs, preservation techniques during organ harvesting, and immunosuppressive regimens in the recipient are described. Selection criteria for suitable patients and possible solutions to the problem of overgrowth of the xenotransplant are discussed. Obviously microbiological safety for the recipient and close contacts is essential, and ethical considerations to gain pu...

Sex Differences in the Histopathology of Acute Type A Aortic Dissections
Conclusion All ATAAD patients had a significantly thinner tunica intima and significantly diseased tunica media compared to the control patients. Our results suggest that the severity of medial aortic pathology is not sex specific in ATAAD patients. Intimal differences between females and males could, however, be considered a potential risk factor for the development of an aortic dissection. Concomitant Surgical Ablation for Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation in Patients Undergoing Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Surgery: A Single-Center Experience in Vietnam
CONCLUSION: Our 5-year experience demonstrates that the combination of MIMVS and surgical AF ablation can be routinely performed with favorable peri- and postoperative outcomes. This reflects our hospital's culture and guidance on patient selection, particularly when adopting minimally invasive approaches for multiple procedures.PMID:38335991 | DOI:10.1055/s-0044-1779622 (Source: The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon)

New Insights into Mortality-Related Risk Factors in Infective Endocarditis: Results from the Brandenburg State Endocarditis Register
Conclusion Our first registry data show the complexity of endocarditis patients and the challenging treatment. Some risk factors can be treated preoperatively. For instance, hypalbuminemia and the duration of the procedure can be controlled with adequate albumin substitution and carefully planned procedures restricted to the essential requirements, that is, hybrid approaches with consecutive interventions. Comparison between Off-Pump and On-Pump Beating Heart Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting
Conclusion ONBHCAB may be a comparable alternative to OPCAB with similar early and late outcomes, despite higher elevation of postoperative cardiac biomarkers. ONBHCAB provides more efficient hemodynamic support, providing a better surgical visual field, than OPCAB while reducing the risk of incomplete revascularization. Is single LIMA-LAD bypass appropriate for OPCAB training?
CONCLUSION: The early postoperative outcome off pump LIMA to the LAD performed by trainees was comparable to experienced surgeons. Single LIMA-LAD was safely performed by trainees under supervision without cardiopulmonary bypass. In order to master OPCAB technique, single LAD bypass might be a reasonable first step to get into touch with the technical characteristics of this special procedure.PMID:38307118 | DOI:10.1055/a-2260-5218 (Source: The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon)

Reverse-U Aortotomy (K ırali Incision) for Aortic Valvular Interventions
CONCLUSION: This new aortotomy incision technique is a safe procedure that provides good exposure for all kinds of aortic valve interventions and protects grafts and can facilitate aortic root enlargement or aortoplasty easily. This incision has the potential to be an alternative to traditional techniques.PMID:38295853 | DOI:10.1055/s-0043-1776705 (Source: The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon)
