Petechial Hemorrhages in Suicide by Hanging: Possible Contributing Variables in Petechial Development
Hemorrhagic petechiae in the conjunctiva and the skin have been related to type of suspension and body height of the victims of hangings. In 265 cases of hanging, we retrospectively examined whether petechiae relate to type of suspension, body weight and height, body mass index (BMI), age, sex, type and thickness of the ligature, and blood alcohol content. The type of suspension was divided into completely suspended, incompletely suspended, and found with feet touching the ground. There was no significant difference in the frequency of petechiae between the feet touching the ground and complete suspension, and they were th...

Unplanned Complex Suicide by Self-Stabbing and Rail Suicide: A Case Report and Review of Literature
We present an interesting case of unplanned complex suicide with self-stabbing and head injury resulting from intentionally being struck by a train. There were also hesitation cuts evident over the neck and left wrist. This case highlights the importance of studying the nature and characterization of the wounds, examination of clothes, and examination of the scene to safely conclude the cause and the manner of death. Ruptured Esophageal Varices From Metastatic Tumor in the Liver: A Case Report and Brief Review of Literature
We present a rare case of ruptured esophageal varices casing death in an individual with metastatic tumor (high-grade) neuroendocrine tumor in the liver causing portal hypertension. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first case report in the literature reporting a neuroendocrine tumor causing esophageal varices. This case report aims to document this rather rare entity, highlight another mechanism on how metastatic disease can result in sudden death, and give a brief review of literature on metastatic tumor in the liver causing esophageal varices. Sudden Death Due to Calcifying Pseudoneoplasm of the Neuraxis: A Case Report and a Review of Sudden Death Due to Undiagnosed Central Nervous System Mass Lesions
We present a case of a 22-year-old man who died unexpectedly after a seizure due to a previously undiagnosed calcifying pseudoneoplasm of the neuraxis (CAPNON). Calcifying pseudoneoplasm of the neuraxis is a rare entity, and this is, to our knowledge, the first described case of sudden death due to CAPNON. Sudden death due to undiagnosed central nervous system mass lesions is rare, and most cases are attributable to hemorrhage, hydrocephalus, or increased intracranial pressure due to mass effect. Seizure is a rare cause of sudden death due to central nervous system mass lesions. This case highlights that mass lesions may c...

Case Report of an Autopsy of a Child Who Died in a Drum-Type Washing Machine Tub: Pathophysiology Resulting in Death and Assessment of Previous Literature
The patient was a 5-year-old boy who was found in a state of cardiorespiratory arrest in the tub of a washing machine without water with the door closed. The autopsy findings included severe facial congestion and petechiae of the facial skin and palpebral conjunctiva. Several organs exhibited congestion. Hemorrhagic spots were seen on the serous membranes of various organs, with particularly marked hemorrhagic spots seen on the lungs. The heart contained fluid blood without soft clots. There were no findings indicative of marked trauma, intoxication, or hyperthermia. The examination results suggested that asphyxia had occu...

Challenges in the Diagnosis of a Posterior Lingual Abscess, a Potential Lethal Disorder: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
A lingual abscess is a rare but potentially life-threatening disorder. Since the introduction of antibiotics, the incidence of posterior lingual abscesses has significantly declined; however, this condition is often missed on physical examination or misdiagnosed as another condition. The consequence of this misdiagnosis can be severe because airway obstruction with subsequent difficult or unattainable intubation can develop and lead rapidly to death. Being relatively rare yet potentially lethal, consideration of a lingual abscess at the time of autopsy is important; otherwise, it may be missed. During most autopsies, the b...

Simple, Frequent Indicator for Personal Identification—Postmortem and Antemortem Abdominal Computed Tomography Findings of a Charred Body
We present a case of a burn victim found after a house fire. Personal identification was attempted, but the body was heavily charred to the bones and the use of physical appearance was impracticable. There were no known relatives or personal belongings of the deceased for comparison of DNA typing. We obtained a series of abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans taken antemortem and found bilateral multiple renal cysts, left renal artery calcification, and a big right inguinal hernia, which matched the deceased's postmortem CT findings and autopsy findings. To date, studies of identification by CT have acted for a rise in p...

The Significance of a Knee Injury in the Investigation of an Unsuspected Motor Vehicle-Pedestrian Collision
We report a case that illustrates the importance of examination of the knee at autopsy when the typical lower extremity diaphyseal fractures that are usually seen in a motor vehicle-pedestrian collision are absent. (Source: The American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology)

Postmortem Chikungunya Diagnosis: A Case Report and Literature Review
We present a case of a patient with recent foreign travel, a rash, fever, and arthralgia with mosquito bites who succumbed to chikungunya viral infection with pneumonia. His diagnosis was established postmortem. A review of the literature is included in this report. This case stresses the delayed time to diagnose chikungunya with serologic testing and the importance of using reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction to aid in rapid and accurate diagnosis and management.
