Fatal Coronary Artery Vasculitis With Mixed Features
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is often investigated by medical examiners as a cause of sudden death. Because of the variation in presentation of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, the examiner must be cautious when assigning a final diagnosis. The presented case depended upon histologic examination of coronary artery lesions to reach an appropriate final diagnosis of vasculitis with mixed features. Autopsy findings showed hepatosplenic vasculitis with noncaseating granulomas, and multifocal diffuse coronary fibrosis with histologic findings consistent with late-stage polyarteritis nodosa (PAN). Howeve...

An Incidental Finding of Congenital Pulmonary Airway Malformation Type 3 During a Forensic Autopsy for a Sudden Infant Death: A Case Report With a Brief Literature Review
This article reports an autopsy of a nearly 11-week-old male infant, found unresponsive in bed with his mother. She had fallen asleep after breastfeeding a few hours prior. Although the autopsy and additional technical examinations did not uncover the exact cause of death, CPAM type 3 was eventually identified on histological examination. Taking into account the context of this case, in which accidental asphyxia/neglect could not be ruled out, it is thought that the presence of CPAM might have contributed to the demise of the infant. As CPAM is a rare congenital disorder, the diagnosis could easily be missed. Therefore, th...

Left Carotid Artery Thrombosis Due to Thromboangiitis Obliterans
We present the case of a 42-year-old homeless female smoker, who was found dead outdoors. Although originally suspected to be a possible trauma-related death, autopsy revealed a thrombus in her left carotid artery, which caused an acute cerebral infarction. It was concluded that thromboangiitis obliterans, likely precipitated by smoking, was the cause of the thrombosis and subsequent death. Postmortem Diagnosis of Clostridium Without Culture Confirmation
We report 3 individuals with clostridial sepsis, 2 culture-confirmed and 1 assumed based on historical information and autopsy findings. Case 1: a 46-year-old man with history of colon cancer status postcolectomy was found unresponsive and rapidly developed decompositional changes. At autopsy, within 1 day of his death, he had marked gaseous distention of the scrotum and palpable crepitance from the eyes to the feet, with bullae formation in the suprapubic region and left thigh. Postmortem culture of bullae fluid grew Clostridium septicum. Case 2: a 63-year-old woman with history of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma who was identifie...

Unexpected Death Associated With Clostridial Sepsis
An 85-year-old woman with a history of breast carcinoma presented to hospital after gradual onset of abdominal pain with hypotension, jaundice, and massive intravascular hemolysis. This was caused by Clostridium perfringens septicemia originating from a liver abscess. Clostridium perfringens septicemia is a rare infection that has a high mortality rate, given that it is frequently unable to be diagnosed until postmortem examination. The source of the pathogen is usually intra-abdominal. Hepatic abscesses, although an uncommon source of primary clostridial infection, should be considered in such cases. (Source: The American...

Suicide by an Unusual Compound: A Case of Barium Acetate Toxicity
Forensic pathologists may sometimes encounter cases of suicide with ingestion of unusual compounds. Herein, we describe a case of suicide by ingestion of barium acetate. Deaths by ingestion of this compound have not previously been reported in literature. This case shows the clinical presentation of the toxicity of barium compounds and highlights the importance of scene investigation and clinicopathologic correlation in suicides by unusual ingestion. Death in Children After Atractylis gummifera L. Poisoning in Morocco—Report of Three Cases and Review of Literature
Conclusions Through the presented cases, we show that Atractylis gummifera L. poisoning remains a health problem that involves children in Morocco, where the plant grows spontaneously. Thus, teaching children to recognize dangerous plants will be helpful to prevent accidental ingestion. (Source: The American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology)

Fatal Drowning Caused by A Swimming Pool Drainage System
In swimming pools, malfunctions in the pool water drainage system can result with severe injuries, or even death, and mostly children are affected by these accidents. In this case report, the death scene and postmortem examination findings of a 12-year-old girl, who was trapped by her feet in the pool water drainage system, are reported. The external examination revealed ecchymotic areas with abrasions on both lower legs and both feet, suggesting suction of both feet through the uncovered pool drainage system opening. To prevent such accidents, safety practices related to the water circulation system should be developed in...

Nail Gun Suicide: An Atypical Case Report and Review of the Literature
Nail guns are pneumatically driven or powder-actuated tools, which are used to drive nails into wood or concrete. A 42-year-old man, who was a builder by profession and history of antidepressant use, was found dead in his vehicle, holding a “Ramset” nail gun in his right hand. A straight metal nail and a book with a small hole were recovered from the scene. (Source: The American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology)

A Case Series of Acute Hemorrhagic Leukoencephalitis
We present two cases of AHL unexpectedly diagnosed at autopsy. These cases demonstrate the often nonspecific and challenging nature of AHL clinical presentation, review neuropathological mimics, and emphasize the importance of considering this diagnosis in the forensic setting. G2 Research Radically Invasive Projectile: The Importance of Recognizing Its Imaging and Autopsy Patterns
Many fragmenting and frangible projectiles have been developed in the course of firearm history. In addition, partially because of the concerns of range and environmental contamination, bullets constructed without lead have become increasingly common. A case regarding a unique projectile that incorporates both features, the G2 Research Radically Invasive Projectile ammunition, is discussed in this article. Here we report a 25-year-old woman who died of multiple gunshot wounds caused by G2 Research Radically Invasive Projectile ammunition. Because of the bullet's unique design, the wounds demonstrated characteristic radiogr...
